Actually, I goofed. I should have written hapax legomenon, which is the singular, rather than the plural hapax legomena. I mix those up regularly.

    Has English Degraded?

Well folks, I give up on Anthony. Every time I think I've understood the turgid prose of his positions, he accuses me of dishonesty. I thought we could have a reasonable discussion, but nope. He makes absurd, illogical accusations such as when I asked if he prayed for Bible translator...

    Has English Degraded?

In Post #33 you wrote calling the KJV "a common, pure, preserved Word of God in English." Again, you accuse me of dishonesty. Frankly, I think this is because you've run out of arguments. Yes, I've been attacking your position. But you've been attacking me personally. Perhaps you simply can't...

    Has English Degraded?

I don't not consider the matter of whether or not one prays for Bible translator missionaries to be a "moral" issue at all, and I can't figure out how you got that from what I wrote. I was simply curious. Very few believers in our pews know a thing about missionary Bible translators. I'm glad...

    Has English Degraded?

It was not a misrepresentation, it was a logical conclusion. No matter. The very title of your thread is, "Has English Degraded? The KJV Debate Proves It." Therefore, you are arguing for the superiority of KJV English, or 1611 English. Again, I don't know what you mean. Please explain how I am...

    Has English Degraded?

No, you argued that it is more pure and high quality than modern English. If that is true than it ought to communicate better than modern English. Wist thou not this be true? I see. So I'm debating dishonestly, and you refuse to answer my points, but would rather criticize them. Please...

    Has English Degraded?

Tibetan is an interesting language. I know a man who is currently translating a Tibetan Bible. It has to be in classical Tibetan (I think--haven't talked to him lately) because there are so many dialects that are not mutually comprehensible. But supposedly all Tibetans can read the classical...

    Has English Degraded?

I know of ministries passing out KJV Bibles in various countries: PNG, African countries, most recently Portugal. (One of our deacons went on that trip.) I do agree that is a good thing, and the KJV language thus digested is a help to folks in those countries. Where I disagree is that somehow...

    Has English Degraded?

Please answer my point that if 1611 English is a superior way to communicate, you should be communicating with it to talk to us here on the BB. I understand it quite well. Read it every day since boyhood, completely through at least once a year; done much research in it; took 6 credits of...

Thanks for proving my points! I think.... :Thumbsdown

Your a better man that I am at Greek, then! :) Having said that, knowing classical Greek would certainly help in learning koine. And as you say NT Greek is colloquial. Still, a language changes quite a bit after 700 years, Homer to Christ. What authors did you study in your classical Greek course?

And now the elephant in the room, dynamic equivalence. Here is how it's inventor, Eugene Nida, described it: “quality of a translation in which the message of the original text has been so transported into the receptor language that the RESPONSE of the RECEPTOR is essentially like that of the...

    Has English Degraded?

Let's see if he'll answer that.... Anthony, why don't you communicate with us in KJV English, if it is superior? Most of us have read the KJV and understand it. I've read it, preached it, studied it all my life, as I believe Logos and others here have.

    Has English Degraded?

Think of the Greek language. I teach NT Greek, and have translated it. However, don't ask me to translate Classical Greek for you. I recognize quite a few words of it, but am not fluent in it. The grammar and vocabulary changed drastically over the 800 or more years between Homer's Greek and the...

There are two Anthony Pritchards with books on Amazon. One writes about car racing and cars. His books look cool! The other is a Mark Anthony Pritchard, and he writes weird stuff. No linguist or Bible translator on there.

    Has English Degraded?

There is not a language on earth and never has been with a standardized version of the language. For example, Japanese has the Kanto dialect, the Kansai dialect, classical Japanese, colloquial Japanese, various levels of honorifics (polite language), etc. I once had twin young men come to my...

    Has English Degraded?

I have to hand it to Anthony. He knows enough linguistics to make his points sound reasonable. However, he has not quoted a single genuine linguist to prove his points. He is making stuff up. What Anthony is trying to portray (the supposed decay of the English language) belongs in the field of...
