A.D.D and Medications

My daughter has some ADD symptoms, too. SHe had a teacher in the 2nd grade who believed very strongly in repetition to learn things like spelling words. My daughter had to write her spelling words 5 times a day, every day of the week. Most of the other kids knew all their spelling words that way, but my daughter was driven almost completely nuts with the mindless repitition.

Humblesmith,
I think the point of the thread is that doctors are "giving" parents an excuse to be lazy and undisciplined by blaming their kid's behavior on ADD/ADHD.

And I hope everyone will remember that when they do have a child with ADD that they don't let the child use that as an excuse for his own bad behavior. He might need some meds for a while to help him learn how to cope, but personally I think this should be a temporary solution rather than a permanent one. And medication is not always necessary, even temporarily.

I forgot to mention the other things my parents did to help me: Strict Structure and scheduling. This helped me focus on things better.

um, this was just a tangent, just to answer it wasn't labeled ADD. The doctors never officialy labeld me ADD either. They called it "Aspergers Syndrome." Which I do have a 15% chance of revealing those symptoms, but ADD is predominant

The other problem is I get too bored in doing research on the topic thats been disected already for days, or I never have the time to? am i just to ignore everything?

Hello from the "beanhead" that started this thread. I am sorry windork was offended, but again as I stated in my opening I was in no way implying there was no such thing as ADD or ADHD, rather just comparing observations.

Thank you all for your input. I am very happy to be informed that my observations are NOT the norm. If they were then I would really find at fault doctors for medicating children rather than looking for environmental conditions that are conducive to ADD or ADHD, but from the observations listed here that does not seem to be the case.

I found some of the things on here fascinating such as the caffine. Interesting something that we are told is bad, especially for children, is something that helps in this particular circumstance. Also the rigid structuring is interesting.

Growing up I heard about ADD but never really knew anyone with it. Now it seems almost pandemic among school aged children. Having a 16 year old who has several friends diagnosed and most medicated has me very curious and I just wanted some input. Thanks again.

Kilad,

Just read your suggested links as well, I had missed those during my first read through.

I guess I started something that there is already a huge controversy over, and there are intersting opinions on both sides. Not enough for me to conclude anything other than we don't know enough about it, either physiologically or mentally.

Aspergers Syndrome is an entirely different affliction. I had one kiddo like that a couple of years ago. "A touch of autism" is what they sometimes call it, and that seems about right. The kids work on their own clock, often do not leave class, just because the bell rang and everyone else left, and generally don't socialize very well.

The kid I had was quite bright and had a wicked but gentle sense of humor. But he had to be told to go to the next class, to get his work done, and to remember rules. He was so nice about it, that I couldn't get upset with him, but he wore me out.

ADD is quite another thing. They are much harder to deal with. Sometimes meds help them to be successful, sometimes they don't.

If I had an ADD kid, I'd try it, but I'd be closely monitoring.

Awesome for you!

As a teacher, I see many, many ADD and ADHD children. It is real....good parents/bad parents regardless. Some children outgrow it as teenagers or adults. Others never outgrow it and still take meds while others learn to cope.
It's real...and it can be managed in one form or another depending on how slight or severe it is.
