So you think it was allright for the kid in the first link to do what he did? That was hateful and rude. The Somali students were eating their lunch and being harrassed. How does that have anything to do with the so-called "War on Terror"?

There is no war on terror. If they find exposure to ham is a hate crime, don't come to America.

If we lose the war on terror it will be a combination 1) us not having the intestinal fortitude to stick with a long and unpleasant task, 2) Liberal polititians and judges hamstringing our military and law enforcement communities, and 3) Liberal media not telling the entire story with regards to the WOT.

It's not about being "exposed" to ham. That was about rude, agressive and inapproptiate behavior. Not sure I would call it a hate crime, but it was unacceptable behavior. LadyEagle, you have a Jewish flag for your avatar. Would you feel the same if the students were orthadox Jews instead of Muslims?

Ah, thanks for giving me the opportunity to respond, which is best articulated by someone else:

You know, I hated middle school too. Children treated each other horribly every day. I remember one time some idiot spit into sandwich of some guy who had walked away from the table. It it is an age at which children can be especially cruel and brutal. But the sandwich-spitter was the same race as his victim, and it was a (marginally) saner time, so that story didn't end up in the newspaper.

This culture of softness and victimization is no good for anyone. Obviously we are on the way to treating Muslims as a privileged class, around whom everyone else must tiptoe, so that they are protected from all possible offense, even offenses committed by boorish prankster schoolchildren.
I also wonder if these Somali students would prefer a ham steak on their table, or life in Mogadishu. As I recall there were incidents in Nazi Germany in which Jews were beaten and forced to eat bacon. Those were hate crimes. Ham steak on a table in a lunchroom? Come on.

I slightly disagree with Robert on this, though. The beating is what made this a hate crime, not forcing someone to eat pork.

Let's put this in perspective: An estimated 250 million Christians will be persecuted/murdered for their faith in 2007 - mostly at the hands of muslims.

Tying an infant's right leg to one parent and the left leg to the other parent and then pulling the parents apart so the infant is ripped in two, is a hate crime. Tying a victim to a chair and then slashing his throat and beheading him is a hate crime. Putting a rubber tire around a child in front of his parents and then dousing that tire with gasoline and lighting him on fire is a hate crime.

Tossing a ham sandwich on a lunch room table is not a hate crime.

So because no one was beaten or beheaded, it's okay??

This is the kind of inane characteriztions that discredit ones argument. No one suggested that it was ok to do something that provoked offense. But hate crime legislation is policing thoughts. No one is equipped to read minds. Attaching hate to situations (which never can be proven) needlessly raises the level of punishment that is excessive and unnecessary. That is the concern with this situation.

Did you even bother to read the whole thread? I was the first one that said it probably wasn't a hate crime. I can't say for sure because I've never really discussed with a muslim what effect someone throwing pork would have.

If it was thrown into a mosque instead of a lunch room would that make a difference? What about painting a swastika (sp?) on a Jews house? Or how about burning a cross in a black man's yard? Just exactly how much harm must be done for it to be a hate crime.

Regardless, the tone of the post, especially the one by Ladyeagle quoting the article makes it sound like it's not a big deal. It is a big deal. It falls way, way short of the God's standard, which, in case you have forgotten, is to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us.

It is a ham sandwich. This is not comparable to a swastika. That is an exageration that holds no water. It is a ham sandwich. A ham sandwich. Did I say that it was a ham sandwich. :BangHead:

It's absolutely ridiculous that some people can claim a so-called "hate crime" over a stinking ham sandwich and then enlist the government's force of law to impose their own belief system in the name of "tolerance".

You're right. It is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge deal! Take that boy who put the sandwich there and turn him over to Al Quaeda. How dare America teach their youth to commit felonious capital blasphemous acts against the only ones in that country who are pure, blameless, and pain themselves to make it by the skin of their teeth into the paradise and 70 virgins promised by MoHAMmad. May all Americans burn in torment if they don't furnish prayer rooms, prayer rugs for the students, and make it absolutely illegal for any cafeteria to serve pork, or to have any implement that have ever made contact with such. To hell with America for trying to use noise ordinances to prevent the call to prayer over a loudspeaker 5 times each day. To hell with America for trying to restrict immigration, questioning the motives of those who apply for permits to build mosques and muslim community centers. To hell with America,,,,,,,,,, .

Careful, friend, such words could be consider a "hate crime" reportable to the authorities. Some day you could be sent to re-education camp so that your "tolerance" for "diversity" might be adjusted to better fit the needs of society. I'm kidding, of course, but the really sad thing is that this could actually come to pass some day based upon the current trends.
