A question for freewillers.

I got to thinking this morning... What hymns do you freewillers sing?

Here's one of my favorites.

1 A debtor to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing,
Nor fear, with God’s righteousness on,
My person and off’rings to bring.
The terrors of law and of God
With me can have nothing to do;
My Savior’s obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.

2 The work which His goodness began,
The arm of His strength will complete;
His promise is Yea and Amen,
And never was forfeited yet.
Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below or above,
Can make Him His purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from His love.

3 My name from the palms of His hands
Eternity will not erase;
Imprest on His heart, it remains
In marks of indelible grace.
Yes! I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is giv’n;
More happy, but not more secure,
When all earthly ties have been riv’n.

My last semester of seminary I changed from a Calvinist view to a Who so ever view. Nothing changed for me but the mechanics. Now that was back in the 60's and for the most part the hymns were the same in the Baptist churches as they were in the Presbyterian churches. We had a lot of hymns written by Methodist in our Presbyterians hymn book. I would say it is about the same today, but I don't know what the Calvinist have in theirs today.

Calvinists can sing with certainty such hymns as:

"My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.

When Darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.
(Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood
supports me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay.
(Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found!
Dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne!
(Refrain)"

Non- Cals enjoy such songs as:

"Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide"

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus
I am Resolved
Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart
Whosoever, Meaneth Me
If You Will Only Let God Guide You
I Surrender All
I Know Whom I Have Believed
I Waited for the Lord My God
I’ve Found a Friend
Lord Jesus, I Long to be Perfectly Whole
Whosoever Heareth
Would You be Free From the Burden of Sin?
Spirit of God, Descend on My Heart
Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove
We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder
Saved, Saved!
Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Savior
Whosoever Will
I’ll Live For Him
Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
Come Ye Disconsolate
Just When I Need Him Most
Where Can We Find Thee, Lord?
Free to be Me
My Heart Looks in Faith
My Faith Looks up to Thee
My Hope is Built on Nothing Less

Oh....for as informative and earnest or profitable this thread is Sovereign....why didn't you just make a thread that said:

"Hey....non-Calvinists...I hate your mother"

That would be equally as profitable and Christ-like.......possibly more intelligent too.

That's pretty good.

I hate neither you or your mother. I used to believe like you and my mother still does.

BTW, I'm a Primitive Baptist. Our beliefs go back to the Apostles, not Calvin.

And here is a prime example of why there is such a divide in the SBC.

I guess you should really call me a Trinitarian since I believe what God teaches on those 5 issues. Your problem is with God and since I believe all that He teaches, it is with me so well. The problem with you in this thread is that you can't answer the question.

I didn't say you did....I said your thread would be equally as profitable, meaningful, Christ-like and possibly more intelligent than if you had merely said something to that effect. And my statement is also true.

If your beliefs DO go back to the Apostles (as you allege) then your manner and the Spirit of this thread sure doesn't, because they would none of them have been this ignorant, nasty or obtuse.
1Cr 13:2 And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

As a Reformed/Calvinistic Baptist.....I have to say that I agree with the sentiments of this post!

I personally believe there is a "maturity cycle" if you will, for most "newly" Calvinistic and Reformed folks (though not all). There seems to be a period of a couple to three years, when they have initially moved from an Arminian view to a Calvinistic view, that they should be locked in a room and not allowed to speak to people!

A truly Calvinistic/Reformed person should be extremely humbled - especially in light of their theology - that a sovereign God would condescend, manifest Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, and be the sacrificial atonement needed for lost sinners.

There is no place for pride among the redeemed - whether Calvinistic or not.

Again....full disclosure....I would be considered a Calvinist, though I prefer the moniker "Reformed" better.
