I understand what you're saying. Although, my husband has reservations about it. The lifestyle I'm talking about is being in the military, I mean it's thrown in your face all the time, everyday after work, on weekends, constantly being bombarded with invites to "party" something I never likened to. I think it has a lot to do with the people. Some are more or less tolerant to one's standards.
A former friend of my husband is a Christian, but now has a drinking problem. It started off as going to clubs, bars for fun, to getting drunk 4 days out of the week. That turned us off, it seemed as if he was trying to recruit my husband into his ways.
I don't mind the occasional drink at a social gathering, I guess it's just knowing one's own boundaries, etc.

I never drink alcohol for the sake of drinking alcohol. Of course I take alcohol in the form of Vicks Formula 44 or Nyquil when I am sick. I would say that alcohol, like medicine, has its uses but is not meant for regular and oft consumption. I don't criticize those who know their boundaries who can take a swallow of wine without getting intoxicated--which is wrong. Alcohol, like drugs, and food can be abused if used overtly, and some things are meant to be used sparingly. I personally have never taken an alcoholic beverage because I am scared to death of starting an addiction because I have no clue what my threshhold would be. There is no compelling reason for me to drink alcohol for the mere purpose of drinking alcohol and taking a risk. Every time I think of so much as drinking one glass of wine I think of being stuck in a dumpy apartment blowing every hard-earned paycheck on one Friday night's worth of booze, getting into a car accident, getting locked up for speeding under the influence, losing my house and family, and whatnot. What exactly are the benefits to drinking alcohol? What's the point? To me it seems neutral at best to those who are experienced and cautious, and devastating at worst. There is just no need in my opinion.
You are letting your pre-conseaved stero type ideas interfear with what several people here have already told you. There are Christians that drink without geting drunk. I like to drink a (one) beer with a steak, I like to make my own beer, and I like a small amount of scotch now and then. You will take this as me going to the wet teeshirt contest at the local roudy bar. In reality we are talking about restaraunts, home and small partys with friends. If my friends are drinking to much, I excuse myself for the night.
If you decide not to drink, good for you. But dont act like you are now better then those that have not come to the same conclution as you. Unless you can point to clear scripture, it is just your opinion and church traditions.

I never said Christians who drink, go to clubs, bars and party. If I implied that, it wasn't my intention. This is the norm and what we see, and those who fit what I said are usually not Christians, or perhaps are. It's not a stereotype, rather an observation of what we experience. LMBO, I have consumed alcohol before, on many occassions, it's been a rather long time since I have. But, as of now, my husband and I have been turned off by the comsuption of alcohol because of what we *see* again, it's hard to explain this to those who may not grasp what we see in the military life.
Aside from certain family members, we don't know Christians that do drink, limitations or not. There are those we knew at one point who are Christian, but their drinking became sinful. That left a bad taste. I guess it's just us wanting to surround ourselves with those who won't try to recruit or pressure us. There is a lot of that in this line of work.
If we decide not to drink, it's not a problem. It's if we do, it may open the doors for others to assume one way or another.
Exactly. I mean, we are only in our early twenties. These are the prime years for many and him choosing not to engage in this passtime is unheard of.
He's been pressured about it since day one. Though he always declinded as we were under the belief that drinking period was a sin, it was never an issue.

We are also told by Paul that we should not drink (or do anything else for that matter) if that is a stumbling block for our neighbor.

I'm partial to Guinness myself and definitely enjoy wines with my meals. I can count on one hand the times I've had more than one drink per sitting.
I've never been drunk and have been to bars to watch sports or have a dinner with a group of friends. I did go to a bar once by myself because I didn't have cable, it was the NFL playoffs. Didn't notice if any women were around but I don't think there were any. I just ordered my beer and enjoyed the game.
For those who are susceptible to alcoholism or unsure, it is best to avoid alcohol and situations that involve alcohol altogether.

The question is: Is it OK to drink--the Bible does not prohibit drinking, only getting drunk. Next question: How much is too much? Is there a line that is crossed? YUP! When it affects us and we are GIVEN OVER. That is true of anything--if Christ is not in control then SOMETHING else is. We are admonished: "Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the Spirit"
Another point: I must be careful that WHATEVER I do does NOT cause my brother to stumble. If what I do damages another then I am guilty of not loving my brother. Therefore, I choose to abstain.

Can anyone who does drink the occasional glass please describe what exactly are the benefits of drinking alcoholic beverages. Disregarding whether it is right or wrong, why drink alocohol? What's the point? What advantage is it? What's so special about it if it is not to get drunk? Is it the taste? Can something non-alcoholic have the same (or as good a) taste? I really don't understand what is the whole point of drinking alcohol.
My question is this: Would Jesus make something that could possibly cause a brother to stumble?
In other words if Jesus made fermented wine at the wedding and some got drunk then wouldn't Jesus be responsible for their drunkeness by providing the wine?

No benefit, some people say a glass of wine will decrease some heart problems. Nobody drinks for that though. It is the taste. And if you make your own beer or wine it is the enjoyement of accomplishment in the task. Home brew tastes 10x as good
If you are getting drunk the drink looses what is special about it. It is the taste and when the senses are dulled it looses the taste. Why wine tasters often spit it out. And why drunks drink the cheepest stuff in the store regardless of taste.
Yes, and yes if you asked me right now I could go for a carmel or strawberry cheese cake. Same rules apply if I eat the whole cheese cake I am guilty of gluteny. But a piece of cake is not a sin is it. And dont tell this fat kid that cheese cake is not addicting.

I dont beleve so. I have usealy heard this argument from Mormons and the leagalists (hyper fundies). The latter who claim to take the bible so literaly, then streach so far to make the case that wine was not wine. And that the people of the bible could not tell the differance between grape juice and wine.
During the wedding when Jesus turned water into wine the head of the feast made the statement the the best was saved for last.
When have you ever heard anybody talk like that about their Welches grape juice. And if wine was just grape juice then why the warning about drunkeness.
