Alcoholic beverages

I will strongly defend it, I KNOW I can stop and yet I haven't had a drink in years. But if I did, I would only have one glass of whatever I was having and then go to water and/or seltzer after that.

Why is it that if one reads the Bible and see how it clearly denounces drunkenness but it speaks of alcohol also in a good light in moderation, and they defend that stance, that they have a problem with alcohol? No, the people going at Scripture and them not seeing the WHOLE counsel of Scripture with regards to the blessing (yes there is blessing) and curse with alcohol and take an unbiblical stance against alcohol that we have a problem with.
I understand this view. I liken it to men who have sexual issues. They see a woman's leg and are turned on by it and begin to lust. In years past to deter men from this behavior women were required to dress covering their ankles and wrist and the lower part of their neckline. yet did this stop the lusting? not at all men still had issues and attempted to seperate themselves from women. The point is that the issue of sin wasn't with the women but the men who lusted after them. Should women dress provocatively? No. But on the other hand how this is defined is different between people and to what extent are we talking about? Ultimately, lustful men need to deal with their sin. As do alcoholics. But alcohol is not intrinsically evil and can be good. Not every needs to get drunk or even buzzed. The only people who think like that are the ones with the issue.

Not everything in scripture is applicable in this society. Just as in France they took to drinking wine because of the poor water, doesn't make drinking alcohol acceptable in all cultures. German baptist drink beer and no one frowns on it.

In Canada, a twice-born believer just doesn't drink alcohol. It is a bad witness. There are so many alcohol related problems, such as youth alcoholism and related violence.

Now, having said that, it doesn't bother me if people drink alcohol. I wouldn't touch it myself. It offers nothing that a cup of tea won't serve. Besides tea never makes one's mouth smell horrible! Also, people don't measure one glass. They simple say that he drinks! I can't live with that.

Cheers,

Jim

I cant speak for anyone but myself, I have a problem with it because I know first hand what it can do, Having to force my father out of the house at the point of a gun to keep him from betting your mother and sisters will do that. after all that you would think I would never drink but it was just the opposite I drank even more. The day I was saved was the day I stoped and have not had a drink since. I have been tempted but have not fallen thank you LORD is all I can say. If you can have just one drink and walk away that is great, but for some its not so easy, I for one would never want to cause another brother or sister to stumble.

Now tea is my true addiction. I can't start the day without my cup of tea and will drink my tea throughout the day. If you call me on the phone, I automatically make a cup of tea because I need to have tea when I'm visiting with someone. Oh - and it never ends with just one. LOL

I agree that there are some with real problems but that doesn't mean that everyone who touches a drink has a problem. I do not drink because of my ministry (we have a NUMBER of alcoholics in our congregation - some in recovery, some not) but I will not ever tell anyone that the Bible says across the board that drinking is wrong.

"And quit drinking downstream from the herd. Try upstream instead."

I didnt say I did...I was telling you to. Anyway, you know what I'd be drinking? LOL

Cheers!

Can you ever admit to being wrong? Your signature said "DRINK DOWNSTREAM FROM THE HERD" (in hot pink) and you have subsequently changed it to another signature.

Did your face turn red when you saw that blatant, lummox-esce, statement?

:saint:

It was never said to me, that's a mistruth.

It was just, uh, not well thought out. It's upstream where you want to drink, from the herd, not, uh, downstream. Can we see this vividly, as to why?

Also, you got all over HAMel, yet, you go around that too. Why not just apologize and admit to it? You should at least read posts before making comment.

It's OK to be wrong. You were. And you're still "OK".

That verse has to do with making a brother stumble because of your actions your drinking in public or anywhere for that matter could cause him to stumble, you dont have to offer him anything to do that.
Yes I am a recovering alcoholic

Im drinking anywhere they serve alcohol or at my house. So dont go into a bar or a party serving it up & you will be fine. its not like I'm holding a flask to your face & forcing you.

Yea, & now Im told by my medical professional to lay off caffeine because its a bad combo with my diabetic medications. Me who has drank a pot of coffee a day for 40 years. Should I scream at anyone walking past me with coffee or tea? Absurd. I just go around tired & in need of a nap & I make clerical mistakes cause Im no longer alert.

But in my area, smack in the middle of Bible belt USA, even non Christians look at a drinking Christian and wonder if they're really a Christian. Being called a hypocrite is very common around here.

I grew up and live in the Bible belt.

The reason Christians would be called a hypocrite is because many Christians go on and on about how evil non-Christians are for drinking.

I've had a number of times when non-Christian friends and colleagues have seen me drinking. They ask me about it and usually say something like, "But don't you go to church?" or "I thought you people weren't supposed to drink." I've been able to respond and share a bit of the gospel and how my actions are related. It's been a positive experience.

Now, if all I said all day long was how alcohol is bad and how people who drink it are evil and of the devil, and then they saw me drinking, yeah, I would be a hypocrite.

Did your face turn red when you saw that blatant, lummox-esce, statement? ... No I laughed.....that was funny!

I told them the truth about drinking so why should I apologize....for telling the truth?

That is the same thing I used to say, I can stop when ever I want to.
Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whoever goes astray by it is not wise.

Yes, well your not me. I can control it & I do control it. You have to own up to your own weakness. Do you go to AA? I go to serve Breakfast at their thanksgiving each year ......yea I know a lot of drunks & by the grace of God, Im not one.

That depends entirely on the situation. There is no clear cookie cutter answer to that.

Many will still say all alcohol consumption is sin after being shown the biblical position on it. If they are still offended by another believer drinking, it's on the one who wants to put personal opinion over biblical truth.
