Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake instructed police to give rioting mobs “space” to carry out their destruction.





“I made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech,” she said to the press.


“It’s a very delicate balancing act, because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well,” the mayor said.





“And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate.”

This may have been addressed. I skipped over the many pages of senseless bickering and name calling and am simply posting to the OP, so I may have missed someone saying something like I'm about to.



But those words read to me totally different than you're portraying them. I am hearing (paraphrase) "We gave the peaceful protesters space. Unfortunately, those who wished to destroy took advantage of that space. It is hard to balance stopping the rioters without infringing on the rights of the peaceful."



Basically, she's saying that she would have to go to an extreme such as martial law, violating everyone's rights, in order to stop the rioting.
