I used to use it on my home desktop but my cable provider gives me McAfee for free now so I don't have to worry about it. Was just curious

Kubel put me onto this little gem in another thread. UltraVNC. http://www.uvnc.com/

With this you can put the server end onto one computer and the viewer on the other and then you can open the viewer computer and completely control the first computer that is set up like a server. I'm typing this on my laptop while watching the desktop browser display (on my laptop screen) over two wireless units on my home network.

It has some definite possibilities for my future.

Just a quick observation--this thread is 3 1/2 years old yet I still refer back to it. Talk about staying power!

Cool stuff here! I've downloaded a bunch of these tonight and am trying out the Avant Browser right now! So far, I really like it, and it does seem to move faster than Internet Explorer or Firefox. I've been on to Open Office for years, thanks to my mom, and I love that also. I recently discovered Thunderbird for email, and I have quit using the Microsoft programs, even though my free trial doesn't expire until the end of January!

Thanks for all the great links! :wavey:

Launchy is a neat little program that lets you launch almost any program or file very easily. Once installed just hit Alt+Space and it brings up a little box, start typing in the file/program name and when it comes up hit enter. I find most times it brings up what I am looking for immediately.

I do go in to the settings to add setting file types for it to index.

It is a great little program... and of course, free.

If you have not looked at Vista you have missed a new search feature that they have developed that is awesome. (One of the few improvements in my mind) :laugh:Just type in a program name or word you want to look for and it is off and running - usually very fast. (It indexes your drive so it can be quick much as google's desktop search feature.)

Anyway, this link tells about an xp add in from Microsoft (Free even) that adds the feature to your task bar in xp.

Just go to Microsofts site and search for "download wds" and you should find it.

Here's a few desktop optimizations/"look-pretty"s...

WindowBlinds

WindowBlinds is a one-of-a-kind utility that allows Windows users to completely change the look and feel of the Windows interface by applying a new skin. There are thousands of different skins to choose from that are freely downloadable from the WindowBlinds website.

A WindowBlinds skin can make Windows look like an alternative operating system, like their favorite sports or car brand, or something completely new. Because WindowBlinds uses the latest hardware acceleration features of modern video cards, WindowBlinds won't slow down your computer and uses very little memory.

WindowBlinds is safe and easy to use. It doesn't alter any system files and users can switch between the default Windows look and feel and a custom WindowBlinds skin with the click of a button. In addition, WindowBlinds has been tested to ensure it works with Windows Vista, so you know it is compatible, reliable,, and more secure.

ObjectDock
ObjectDock™ is a program that enables users to organize their shortcuts, programs and running tasks into an attractive and fun animated Dock. By allowing users to have more control over how they organize their desktop, users can take control of their desktop icons and shortcuts to have them be available when where and how they need them. This, all with the unique style and top-rate performance that ObjectDock is known to deliver!

In constant development, ObjectDock and ObjectDock Plus are enhanced often to provide the most unique features of any stylized shortcut organizer / launcher available.

CursorXP
Stardock CursorXP is a program that lets you use and create incredibly cool looking Windows mouse cursors.

It does this by taking advantage of the new visual effects features of Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

CursorXP users can create and use cursors that look and feel far superior to anything you've ever seen before! Best of all, it's really easy to create your own super-charged cursors! It integrates into the standard Mouse interface of Windows and is easy to turn on and off as you need.

MyColors
MyColors is a safe way to change the look and feel of your Windows desktop. In other words, it is a way to make the graphical part of Windows look the way you want it to. MyColors Themes are basically a collection of specialized artwork that is applied to your Windows desktop using industry proven and highly supported software. At any time, you are able to convert back to your original desktop with a click of a button. Nothing will be permanently changed on your system, so you can have fun and try many different themes. MyColors changes things like your wallpaper, start menu, start bar, window borders and much more. It’s fun and safe, so what are you waiting for?
Demo of styles: Here
Try it with a free style: Here

Incidentally, I use WindowBlinds, ObjectDock, and CursorXP myself... hundreds of different skins available, and people making more and more free ones all the time.

Google has a desktop that includes a sidebar like Vista's and it has a ton of gadgets that are fairly useful.

LAME mp3-encoder was designed as an open-source application for many years and now it's the best mp3-encoder ever!

LAME gives you the best possible quality/compression, provides lots of function and works very fast. The original LAME mp3-encoder is aviable from the official homepage (www.mp3dev.org), but it's only aviable as a console-application. Such console-applications are very flexible, but most users prefer to work with GUI (graphical user interface) applications.

LameXP is a GUI for the LAME mp3-encoder, that makes it much more comfortable to use LAME. Using LameXP is very easy, because the user-interface has been desingned as simple as possible and it uses the new WindowsXP style.

Here are some key features of "LameXP":

· Creates MP3 (MPEG 1.0 Audio-Layer III) files
· Provides a graphical user-interface for WindowsXP*
· Provides the highest possible MP3 quality/compression-rate
· Supports PCM Wave-Audio files, MP3 files and raw PCM files
· Supports bitrate-based and quality-based compression
· Supports variable bitrate MP3 files and avarge bitrate encoding
· Supports Mono, Stereo, Joint Stereo and Dual Mono
· Supports ID3 Tags (ID3v1 and ID3v2)
· Supports Resampling and Stereo/Mono Downmixing
· Supports varoius encoder quality/speed modes

LameXP 3.04 RC6

Great Bible program

http://bpbible.com/features

This is a small program that runs Sword bible modules. It is set up as a portable apps program but you can use it freestanding as well.

THE GREAT THING about it is that it has Robertson's Harmony of the gospel built in!!!!

I just scanned in and set up in html some of my hard copy so I could have it with me but this program is much cleaner since my hard copy has a ton of notes in it

Anyway, give it a look if you want a harmony and you do need one if you are going to study in the Gospels!
