To get back to the OP:

I have not read much in the Institutes. However, for my doctoral project I am working on preaching in the Old Testament and its application for daily life. For part of that project I am analyzing 2 preachers and their preaching ministry from the OT. John Calvin is my selection from history and Mark Dever is my selection from the current day.

So I will be in the coming months reading a lot of material by Calvin. I am looking forward to it. I have found the sermons by Calvin to be excellent. He was an expositor during his ministry.

I have a question for Calvinists, as far as the gospel you say God offers salvation to every one through the gospel. Paul said in 2Timothy ver10 that he endures all things for the elects sakes, that THEY may also obtain the salvation which is in Chirsit Jesus.... he didn't say every one (THEY the elects sakes). 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, this doesn't sound like the preacher to me but God. and the end of :10 says hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: didn't say gave it but revealed it to you. (or in you)
Romans 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord who hasth believed our report. :17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Hearing who the preacher or God? Galatians askes in 3:2 Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of Faith?
would this be the preacher? Now look at John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Ok I have talked to one person by phone who called himself a calvinist. we see many things the same. I would order Historical books from him. I also would send him our baptist association books to him. He read a letter of our postion on the gospel and he rejected it. He believes if the gospel doesn't go out that people will perish. He made it sound like the gospel escorted the Holy Ghost (I do believe it takes the Holy Ghost to preach the gospel though). I believe a person is quickened by the Holy Ghost and it has nothing to do with the gospel preaching of a two legged preacher and after they are quickened only then will the gospel have an effect on them. If they never hear a preacher they still have been quickened by the Spirit they just don't know about makeing their election and calling sure. They have eternal salvation but just have not came unto it for the joy of it here in time. This person has had a real change they just have not come to the understanding of it. Rev. 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.
I don't believe God is restricted to mans efforts to accomplish his own will. But I believe man has a part in time in the Church but no part in the Eternal Salvation of men. Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. The gospel did not bring faith but the Voice of God did. Roman 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation(see it says unto, not into. salvation is in Christ and to be connected unto it the one that hears must also be in Chritst, for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus) to every one that believeth; (believeth past tense) to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

why are baptists giving the glory to calvin

john calvin was not a baptist in any sense of the word, nor was he or augustine the originator of the doctrines of grace. these men may have been sound soteriologically, but they had obvious problems with eschatology and ecclesiology. when we call ourselves calvinists, or direct people to his writings, we open ourselves up to the criticisms of the rest of calvin's theology. stick to the Word of God as the source of settling our doctrinal arguments, you will find it more than adequate.

also, TULIP was coined by armenians. there are more accurate descriptions of these doctrines:
total depravity = human inability
unconditional election= soveriegn grace
limited atonement = particular redemption
irresistable grace = effectual calling
God's preservation causes man's perserverance

And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

There's another ORB here who doesn't exactly believe the way you do, brother.
you sound more Primitive Baptist to me than Old Regular.

There are plenty of Grace Old Regulars out there. I would say we are close to the Primitives but differ on some things. we believe in a general manifestation that most primitives usually don't go along with. Mark3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: we would look at John 1:9 That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. we look at this as a general manifestation. Also Hebrews 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
You could say we see things different on the unelect maybe. But we have preached with the primitives in the last 5 years now I would say. If you go to baptist history you could find somethings about us compared to primitives. But I was just trying to figure the Calvinists out a little bit. I thought I saw the statement on this thread but didn't see it looking a second time. it must have been on another. but it sounded a little bit like Gospel Regeneration and I Knew a calvinist that believed like that so I asked the question.

However, keep in mind that in serious research it is better to cite authoritative editions of works, which typically means paper, not Internet, especially for a work as readily available as the Institutes. Any decent academic library ought to have at least one copy.

I am curious to know...what is the difference between Calvin's Institutes on the net and in book form? Is there really a difference? What makes book form more authoritative? Are we talking about differences in page numbers when doing footnotes? Or is there a substantive difference?

I encourage you to secure a copy or look on the web for the Institutes.

If you do not read them through, at least get them and use them for a reference like you would any other systematic theology for the several topics like; the trinity, the sacraments, the person and work of Christ, etc.

It will augment and deepen your understanding of doctrine like none else you have found I believe. That is always the way it is when you use primary sources.
