Christian Liberty

We all agree that there is liberty in Christ. If you haven't figured it out yet the discussions about alcohol that have been going on for the last week is about defending ones Christian liberty. I believe that it is entirely appropriate to be strong in your liberty but your strong position should not question, condemn, or become an offence to others. So how far does your liberty go? You can require your liberty in your own house and of your children but that is about as far as it goes. You cannot force your liberty on someone else if you do then you impinge on their liberty. I highly value my liberty in Christ. The apostle Paul wrote:
(1Co 6:12) All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
(1Co 10:23) All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Lets edify the Lord

Brother Jeff,

You have started a discussion that is worthwhile and presented Scripture to support your view. This is a discussion that can be edifying to those on this Forum if continued in the spirit with which you opened the discussion.

On another thread I expressed the following:

Brother Jeff [Old Union Brother] has started an appropriate discussion on this subject of liberty in Jesus Christ. It has received little attention, perhaps because he does present the Biblical basis for his opinion. And defending your viewpoint from Scripture is always more difficult than simply expressing your bias.

. On the subject of alcohol, it would be my sin to cause another to stumble because I flaunted (can't think of a better word) my liberty. With liberty comes responsibility.

thank you for you kind words....

Since we're on using Christian liberty (especially as it pertains to the concept of total abstinance of any and all forms of alcohol vs. "moderate" consumption of alcohol in any and all forms), why do those tee-totallers not roundly condemn the use of cough suppressants such as NyQuil that clearly states on its label that it has an alcohol content of 10% (i.e., 3.54 ml of alcohol per every one 12 fl oz container!)?

 Liberty is the freedom to love one another.

And to love (if it is true love) is to sacrifice oneself for another to whatever extent will build them up and edify them.. including not having our wants if need be.

Because their point most typically is the recreational use alcohol for various reasons.

 Amen!

(though the phrase 'to whatever extent' could be problematic if misinterpreted or misapplied)

Then why don't "they" just come right out and tell us that they are only referring to, as you put it, "...the recreational use [of?] alcohol for various reasons" instead of painting with too broad a brush any individual who'd even dare sip any form of liquid that would have even the least amount of alcohol in it???

Moreover, who is the one who gets the final say-so on whether or not it's "recreational" or not?

(Please note that I personally prefer not to knowingly consume alcohol as a "recreational" beverage, but if some other Christian cares to consume alcohol in moderation as a "recreational" beverage, I personally have not at this time been "called" by the Holy Spirit to condemn him/her for so doing.)

I hope you aren't making the assumption I think I "have been 'called' by the Holy Spirit to condemn him/her for so doing", as if that is what I am doing. Not even close

You asked a question for which you apparently didn't have an answer and I gave it to you. The fact I did shows the information is out there. And yes, while there are some who are absolutist on alcohol (such as not even Nyquil, ect..) but the minority voice isn't the one you should be listening to on the issue of those who hold to the view. While I don't agree with them, I at least understand what they hold to and why and their arguments relating to it. Otherwise how can you help them to come out, if you don't know where, in their view, they are :)

I never stated that you (or any one else for that matter) made any claims in writing of being "called by the Holy Spirit" to defend whatever position they themselves may hold on this very devisive issue.

Actually, I'm more in agreement with what you posted than what you may (at first glance anyway) think.

My only point is that there seems to be more extremism on both sides of this very divisive issue---both of which are harmful.

It's easy to provide anectdotal evidence/straw men for either opposing side.

It's much more difficult to put one's self in the other person's shoes (and then walk 5-6 miles in them).

In the above.. I agree.
