If it is used inside the actual service, and not allowed to be taken home, I see no issue in copying materials. It would fall under the Constitutional provision of Congress cannot prohibit the free exercise of religion. Now, the moment you allow people to take things home? I think you have a problem there.

That is HARDLY the same thing. We are talking about passing out words, attributed to the author.

While stepping outside of the narrow topic of “copyright” …

I work in Commercial Land Development (Architect-Civil Engineer-Land Planner) and “Churches” are notorious among Government agencies for violating local laws. They frequently build additions without permits and often run “businesses” (like a day care) out of the facility without a license. In my personal experience, it is far more common among very small congregations (less than 100 members) than giant churches (over 1000 members) simply because once you get over 1000 members there is probably SOMEBODY that owns a business on the governing board that understands the legal risks of “just doing it” (without permits).

I tend to sympathize with the small churches. The Byzantine process of getting a permit sends billion dollar corporations running to companies like the one where I work to “deal with it”, so 50 people in a tiny wooden church that want to add a kitchen for the monthly “pot luck” are at a disadvantage (my time is billed at $200 per hour with a long list of million dollar projects waiting for it … I only wish that money came to me ).

On the other hand, as a Christian, I am embarrassed for our Lord when someone explains that God gave them a vision and told them to use recycled material that they had scrounged to build something that I know poses a threat to lives and a violation to Life-Safety Codes. … MY GOD most certainly DID NOT tell you to stack masonry blocks and bolt some old light poles that you found on top and then mount a fiberglass steeple that was donated from a demolished church on top of that … and to erect this structurally unstable tower in a high wind zone over the Handicapped Parking Spaces and near the Church Building so that WHEN it collapses in a high wind (and not if) it has the opportunity to kill the people exiting the church, the handicapped people getting into their cars and for a finale, it can fall on the church taking out the side wall.

Sorry if this is off-topic. It was just where I see churches ignoring laws sometimes out of ignorance and sometimes out of a sense of entitlement. As I said, among Local Governments, Churches are notorious for unpermitted construction and businesses. (We got a Rep.)

We are very careful to give credit for the songs. I think as long as you acknowledge the author, it’s ok… I think.

No, I do everything PRO BONO for the Church on MY TIME (except agree to help permit towers that will get people killed because God said she should build it).

I cannot even begin to put a dent in the debt that I owe to Christ. I can only “pay it forward”.

Never, but I have heard others pray for their teams at prayer meetings.

I’m reminded of the movie “We were soldiers”. The colonel, a Catholic, was praying at a church before deploying for the safety of his men.

During the prayer, he acknowledges the enemy may also be praying and says “I ask that you ignore their heathen prayers”.

I suspect many pray similar prayers for their sports teams. Do you think that diminishes prayer?

Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the League would not object to live showings of the Super Bowl by religious organizations, regardless of screen size, as long as the viewings are free and are on premises that the church uses on a routine and customary basis. The NFL stated its intention to implement the policy starting with this year's Super Bowl.

"As long as they follow the basic guidelines set forth by the NFL, churches can now rest assured that they are free to have football parties and show the Super Bowl game,"

Even if permitted, I would hope that a church would choose not to take up an offering, under those circumstances. I would not want to give even the appearance of wrongdoing to any outsiders who might be in attendance. But that's just my initial reaction to the idea.
