It's a mystery to me too. I've voted mostly Republican for the last 24 years (voted for G.W. Bush three times, once as governor and twice as President) but the support of Coulter by the right wing just shows how much people on the extreme right revel in the politics of contempt -- the same thing that they (rightly) condemn the extreme left wingers of doing.

I am not the subject, and yes, you are wrong. I have never said anything even close to hate speech about President Bush. I have made it clear, I think he is unfit for his office, but never hate speech. In fact, I explicitly have said I don't hate the man. So you are very wrong.

So with that, forget trying to turn tables, and stick to the topic. Coulter is so far out there, I can hardly believe anyone can justify her polemics and ad hominem attacks. She is a disgrace, not only to conservatism, but to humanity. There is no compassion in her vile words.

Where have I said anything that even remotely construes hate speech. Certainly not in the ones you cited. These are opinion, and are certainly supportable, even if you disagree. It is a far cry from standing up and making a speech calling someone "faggot". So again, if you can't stay on topic, start your own thread if you like.

Martin, I absolutely agree with freedom of speech, but it does have limits. To call Edwards "faggot" in a public speech is slander. She can defend that by proving the veracity of the statement, but I have seen no evidence that John Edwards is a homosexual.

Back to my main point, Coulter is a hateful and mean person. I STILL am amazed that anyone takes any of her diatribes seriously.

The Reclaiming America for Christ conference heads for Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in March and replacing key speaker Dr. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries is newly added Dr. Richard Land, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
Kennedy, 76, remains hospitalized after suffering a heart attack that led to cardiac arrest late December. His condition is improving, according to Coral Ridge's executive vice president, Brian E. Fisher.
The ministry announced over the weekend that Land will take the place of Kennedy as the prominent evangelical leader recuperates in the hospital.
"Dr. Land is a powerful and outspoken voice in America on behalf of biblical standards in public life,” said Dr. Gary Cass, executive director of the Center for Reclaiming America for Christ. “We very much look forward to hearing from him when he speaks at our gathering.”
"Why reclaiming America?" Kennedy had asked at a previous Reclaiming America conference.
"This nation started out as a Christian nation and was the work of Christ in the beginning, and therefore, we have every right to reclaim it," said Kennedy.
Although America was established with the Christian faith, there are people today who seem to think that Christians just arrived from Mars, Kennedy had said, "that we're some sort of aliens that have come here to obtrude ourselves into their lovely secular culture."
But the origins of America say it all.
"America simply began as a church relocation project," Kennedy told conference participants. Leaving the persecution in England, Pilgrims arrived in America to establish "a new home for their church."

==Why should Land do such a thing? He is not her pastor, in fact, I don't even know if she is Southern Baptist. It is not his place to "renounce" her. I suspect he is there to talk about a certain topic. He is not being asked, and paid, to give his opinion of the various speakers.

Her statement about Edwards, or any other political person, is no big deal. Again if people can't take the heat then they need to get out of the kitchen and stop all the whining.

I am troubled by the need of some in this country, on both the left and the right, to silence people they either don't like and/or don't agree with. There is a little thing called freedom of speech you know. And while there are certainly limits to that freedom (ie..threats, etc) we can't deny that freedom to someone simply because his/her speech is unpopular or negative in it's tone. Ann Coulter has just as much right to spew her venom as Al Franken, Cindy Sheehan, or Jesse Jackson does. If you don't like her views/statements don't buy her books, don't watch/listen to her on talk shows, and just generally ignore her. If her books stop selling she will go away. However there is no need to have her silenced or pushed out of the public eye by various leaders renouncing her. That sets a very dangerous standard.

As for her "attacks" on the 9/11 widows, again, so what? Why should these women care what someone like Coulter thinks/says of them? I can't think of any reason they should. In fact, watching the video, I think her response to Coulter was very good and sound. If those women were not prepared for harsh reactions from various political people then they should have kept silent. If any person is going to go public, put themselves in the public spotlight, and put themselves in the midst of a political story they must be able/willing to accept the heat that comes with that. If they are not, or cannot, then they need to stay out of the public eye.
