Did God forgive Adam and Eve? Did He allow them to remain in the Garden?

Did God forgive David? Did his son die?

Did God forgive Moses for disobeying? Did He allow Moses to enter the Promise Land?

There is a difference between forgiveness and being qualified for a ministry. Perhaps your friend doesn't understand forgiveness and qualifications for the the ministry.
