Despite strong economy, many Americans struggling to get by

“While startling data to some, it comes as no surprise to those Americans who are struggling to get by.

Debra Poppelaars of Nashville, Tennessee, underwent spinal fusion surgery last fall and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter. Although she is insured, she owes roughly $19,000 for her portion of the medical bills.

Between disability, a job change and the mounting debt, she hasn’t been able to make ends meet and is now facing bankruptcy.”

“It’s very hard at 64 years old, I look back and think I am in this position and I should be able to retire,” she said.

Jerri Wood of Renton, Washington, says she makes choices each month to pay one bill instead of another as she struggles to pay for her health care. Wood has lived for years with a brain tumor that requires regular monitoring and was recently diagnosed with diabetes that she takes insulin to manage.”

I bet I could dig up newspapers from 1928, during the height of the Roaring 20's, and find news articles saying "despite strong economic times, some struggle to get by."

Yep. And we thought we were pretty much past those days. And we had made great progress until this century when American capitalism become a benefit mainly for the upper crust of society.

Yep. The right-wing rarely contributes anything of real substance. It’s usually just right-wing myths.

Anybody (everybody) that wants a job can get one nowadays. The government is taking less money out of everyone's paychecks compared to just a year ago, 10 years ago, or even 40 years ago. Home ownership rates are in the mid 60% range. How is this proof that the upper crust is mainly the beneficiary of capitalism?

Because his extremely impressive hero, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, AKA She Guevara said it.

I've got employees now, guys in their early 20s, leaving $55K+ jobs to make 15 bucks an hour because they refuse to stay in shape or don't like taking a urinalysis.

They are going to struggle, mainly because of the choices they're making.

It is with so many people lacking the skills for so many jobs in this economy.

They are not paying the money either. Ya want quality & experience, your not going to get a kid with 3-5 to do the job of a qualified professional with proven experience.

I remember during one of the recent (past) elections a man speaking to a candidate as a former steel worker who had retrained to be a computer programmer only his work had just closed because programming was being outsourced to India. He asked for advice on what an ex-programmer should train for to be part of the "new economy"?

Most twenty-somethings seem to be training for public sector jobs. Can you build an economy with just teachers and police officers and government bureaucrats?
