Did Jesus speak in Hebrew or in Aramaic?

I'd put ot this way - it would be very strange if Jesus did not speak a Galilean dialect of Aramaic because Scripture seems to indicate He came and appeared like the common Jews that He lived with.

Many around Jerusalm did look down on Jews from Nazareth and the Galilean area. Jerusalem was their religious hub. But the common language of the Jews in the 1st century was Arabic.
Tell me about the Jewish population in Germany and how well they spoke Hebrew.
Go ahead and look in the local German records. I don’t think you will find an accurate description.

Had Jesus chosen the religious leaders as His Disciples and limited His ministry to the "upper class" Jews then you may have a point.
He spoke to them often.

I don’t think you are familiar with Jewish customs as well as you think. What do you think they taught in the synagogues? It is not much different today.
You say that you cannot imagine the Jews using any language (when given the chance) than Hebrew.

Are you aware that the New Testament - even books written specifically to a Jewish audience - were not written in Hebrew?
Who isn’t.
They were written in the Koine common language. You realize that the disciples were told before the Holy Spirit was sent that they were to tell everyone in the world?
Given those instructions, today, I would use English since nearly every country teaches it. That may be offensive for some people to hear but it is reality. The British Empire spread the language. It is known all over the world.
There are lots of people in other countries who write in English, their second or third language, because they understand it will reach farther. This doesn’t mean a German speaks French because he writes in English.

Having visited Miami, FL ... I suspect Jesus spoke the language of his immediate audience. Aramaic in Samaria, Hebrew in synagogue and Jerusalem, perhaps Greek in the Decapolis and Latin in the Courts. Jesus primary goal was to reach his audience.
I will vote this one the top answer.

Matthew 27:46, . . . Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?
Matthew uses the Hebrew from the Psalm Jesus was quoting.

Mark 15:34, . . . Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?
Mark cites Jesus speaking in Aramiac.

I do not need German records. The Jews I knew of when in Germany spoke German. The Jews I know in the US speak English.

They taught and discussed Scripture in the Synagogues. Some used Hebrew Scripture while others used Greek Scriptures. Ironically, Jesus did not quite from any known Hebrew Scriptures.

The Jews would, in the synagogue, typically read the text in Hebrew or Greek (depending on the Jews in question). The derasha would be in the dialect and language contemporary to the population.

Today most Synagogues teach Judiasm (not the Hebrew religion) and they typically teach in Hebrew or the language of the area where they are located.

I’d like to know where this information comes from.
I haven’t been able to find Mary’s podcast. But I’m not a premium subscriber either.
I’ve never heard her speak.
Who has this information?

I must be tired.
I read it again. I won’t edit it out as long as you promise to laugh as hard as I did.

Matthew 27:50, Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, . . . .
Mark 15:37, And Jesus cried with a loud voice, . . . .
Luke 23:46, And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, . . . .
John 19:30, . . . he said, It is finished: . . . .

The word translated, "It is finished," is the Greek, τετελεσται.

τετελεσται, tetelestai
