Yea, but we need Greek books and Hebrew books to help us understand the LANGUAGE of the Bible.
We need historical books to help us understand the CONTEXT in which the Bible was given.
And God has said IN THE BIBLE that he has gifted the church with teachers who help us to understand the BIBLE. Those teachers often write books that we ought to have the humility to use.
The unlearned men of the Bible were ten times more knowledgeable about languages and historical backgrounds than half of seminary graduates today.
We have to go to seminary just to be able to come CLOSE to the "unlearned" men of the Bible.
That means that if a preacher does not get an education he is leap years behind the most unlearned of God's men in the Bible.
An education is necessary and ought to be prasied and not dismissed.
The stupidity of people in the pew in this country is directly related to the stupidity we've had in the pulpits in this country for the last 7 or 8 decades.
Does seminary make someone a worse preacher???
I've seen a couple friends who had a problem with communicating effectively after seminary. Lots of reasons but I wouldn't blame seminary.
Obviously that depends on what seminary they attend. Agreed?Yes, as many have gone to Seminaries that let go teaching/holding sound doctrine, and have produced liberal/critical Post Modern pastors!

Yeshua1--totally agree!
The two pastors I've had that had Ph.D's were one great and one not so great.
The best pastor I've sat under had little formal education, but knew and lived his Bible (just English and just KJV although not an "onlyist"). He was a retired farmer. Also had a great one who also drove truck for a living.

You still have DTS, the SBC seminaries, and a handful of others that refuse to bow to the liberal theologies.indeed, but sad to say, even a once great one like Fuller caved into critial thought decades ago!

Amen! (10)yes, and thankful for those who choose to stand firm !
Amen! (10)
....that should help me get my "head out of the sand!" What would I do without a well-educated man like yourself to disparage me, as you defend the need for spending time and money on your advanced theological degree?!
I'll bet you make a lot of friends with your intellect and bedside, or should I say, pulpit-side mannerism! I know I'd steer a wide path around any church I saw your name attached to!
I'd prefer to be with all those "stupid people from the last 7 or 8 decades" than a day of fellowship with a person as rude and cold as you!
Your attitude and manners show that your head is stuck somewhere other than the sand, us unlearned people have their heads stuck in!
Wow, what audacity! I can see why visitors to this board decide to stay away!
True that better to have the original languages than not as a pastor, ditto for seminary background, but FAR more important 'training" is what the Lord does to one in the 'real World", and also just as important as knowing what the Bible ststes is to actually apply it, so would rather have a pastor who knows "just" the English bible , but is a prayer warrior, and whose heart is into serving the Lord amd maturing the saints, to amother one who can recire entire bible in both Greek and Hebrew, yet unable to teach what he knows in order to mature his flock, nor actually applies what he has learned!
Then there's Princeton, which has a chair of the Department of Theology who believes children can be "aborted" up to the age of one month.best example of 'caving in" has to be Yale/harvard, as both were founded to be intionally used to train ministers of the Gosspel, Bible knowledge and being able to know and present the Gospel manditoryfor ALL graduates, look at both now!

You have in fact been lumping things together. To mix metaphors you paint with too wide of a brush. You think seminaries in general are lame. But that's just stinkin' thinkin'. Are you able to reel off names of respectable Christian seminaries? Or are you just comfortable throwing grenades? You need to amend your faulty remarks. Qualify them.:wavey::thumbsup::tear:
And my alma mater just fired its head of theology for going home on Firday as a man, and coming to teach a class on Monday as a woman! And she/he had a seminary degree and education! It was also a part of the Emergent Chruch, as are a large number of his/her students who protested the firing!
And my niece's husband just finished seminary and is going to pastor for the Lutheran church, the one that approves of homosexual preachers and members, and same-sex weddings! And this is what seminary is doing to promote a better, more educated man or woman!
I am not lumping all preachers who graduate from seminary in the same group, just pointing out how lame seminary has become! This is MHO, and while you may see it is wrong; I can't help but see what seminary is turning out today! Selah!

Because your Alma mater has departed from the Faith does not mean most have. Stop with your guilt-by-association thinking.
Be serious Rippon....what are they doing for Gods Kingdom?
