I was raised in a Baptist church where 'easy believism' had the pastor's son 'walking the aisle' four different times from the time he was seven to eighteen. Each time the pastor explained that he had 'made a decision for Christ in the past, but just didn't really mean it'. Each time resulted in another baptism.
As Cathode said before, simply giving intellectual assent doesn't do it.
Unfortunately, 'easy believism' is preached in many fundamentalist churches still today.
I pray especially for them, because they seem so stuck and blinded, and there is so much more for them.
The way is narrow and difficult, and they choose the broad and easy path of great danger.
The way is narrow because it is the way of the Cross. The work is not done at first believing, the way begins at self denial.
“If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
To overcome self Jesus gives us His Love in our quiet time with Him each day, He radiates it out.
Only Love denies itself and bears all things taking up its Cross daily.
“It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Love is not something we can manufacture, it is of the unfailing Eternal, it is something that is given to those who live in the Presence of Jesus, it is the oil for the lamp of our hearts. Not something that can be bought, but only obtained by many hours spent with Jesus.
This is why meditation on Jesus Passion is so beneficial to us. This is when Jesus Love was so completely open and on its fullest display to all mankind.
How can we be cold to our brothers and sisters when our hearts are transfixed by Jesus sufferings for love of us.
“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me”
Be drawn to Him each day on the Cross in meditation, you will not do this long before Grace takes you into Contemplation and you will truly be standing before Him. Then Jesus is no longer just a figure on a page, but your good Lord Jesus on The Cross dying before you and for Love of you.
One moment in Contemplation can fill us with immense Graces, The Cross is the Eternal wellspring that we must be drawn to, to fill up from when our cross becomes hard to bear, to take a great draught of His Love for our strength.
“ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me “
Jesus suffering before us can induce exquisite sorrow, but it produces such an ardent Love that we don’t fail and fall away.
Love changes us, it puts Jesus flesh on our bones, it creates a heart of flesh within us, it expels self, it makes us see and think differently and to do the Will of The Father.
Love incarnates Jesus within us so that we can truly be the Body of Christ.
