Republican congressional leaders wanted to get an lengthy amount of time before the next vote on the debt ceiling, first calling for an 18 month increase and then 12 months and ultimately said they would accept a minimum of 6 months. So what did Art of the Deal Trump do? He accepted the first proposal made to him by Pelosi and Schumer, a 3 month deal and made no counteroffer. The deal was tied to Hurricane Harvey relief so Trump had plenty of leverage to get a longer time frame. Instead he went along with Pelosi and Schumer.

Later in the day he shared a plane ride to North Dakota and also the stage at a tax reform rally with liberal Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Democrat from North Dakota. He called her a "good woman."

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America’s debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party’s leaders.

In deal-making mode, Trump sided with the Democratic leaders — “Chuck and Nancy,” as he amiably referred later to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — as they pushed for the three-month deal, brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

At first, in Wednesday’s Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence.

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, “We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.” He didn’t mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present. “We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred, very important.”

“I think the deal will be very good,” Trump added.

He just sent a very strong message to do nothing establishment Republicans.

Something along the lines of get on board or get left at the station.

Intentionally.

McConnell's reaction tells the tale. He's miffed because Trump beat him to it.

His resignation would be a good place to start.

He is attempting the GOP senators and representatives to actually do something. If they want to sit and do nothing then he will go to those who will do something. If I were president I'd do the same.

Those Republicans in Congress want to delay any vote that might anger their conservative base as long as possible regardless of how negatively that stance impacts the country as a whole. Their unspoken agenda is 'next election and party before country'.

Lifelong Democrat makes deal with lifelong Democrats Pelosi and Schumer.
Reaction of Trumpies? "It's Ryan and McConnell's fault. They're RINOs."

Ryan has been on a Trump bashing tour for the last 6 weeks. Why should Trump deal with that piece of swamp sludge?

Ummm....because he just said two days ago that he's giving Congress 6 months to legalize DACA. Because he's on a tax reform tour and needs all Republicans on board to get it passed. Because he's after Wall funding. Infrastructure bill. Increase in defense spending. Etc, etc.

Instead of cutting Ryan and McConnell off at the knees in front of Democrat leadership why not take them to the woodshed in private and tell them how it's going to be? THEN if they don't comply go ahead and humiliate them.

I fail to see what you're so upset about. Trump did good.

Set a precedent of accepting first offer out of the gate from Democrats with no counteroffer. Undercut his own party leaders. Created a situation where many legislative issues will come to a head in December (a recipe for making bad deals). Played chummy with Pelosi and Schumer, and Heidi Heitcamp.

I think those of us who have never negotiated in their lives should sit back and wait to see what happens. Think of all the predictions about Trump that haven't come true. We love to speculate about the future, but it's only speculation. Trump has a long history of making the right choices, which are sometimes the right compromise, and coming out on top. His foresight in impeccable. In fact, his poll numbers are bouncing back after an all out assault by the MSM. Let's sit back and see what happens.

POLL: TRUMP POPS TO 45%...

Well, that's not me. I've been a business owner for 28 years. Negotiate all the time.

Think of all the predictions about Trump that haven't come true.

You mean like how he's going to give in to bad deals with the Democrats to become more popular?

In fact, his poll numbers are bouncing back after an all out assault by the MSM. Let's sit back and see what happens.

Yep.

I am confident he already took them to the woodshed in private and it did not work.

Until recently, the Republicans did not want the debt ceiling raised.

Not quite. Republicans have realized the debt limit ceiling needed to be raised but they favored tying other measures onto the bill to try and get real changes in the budget and debt reduction. Trump's deal has no strings attached. It will be up to the House GOP to add items about debt reduction or other policy goals. This will, of course, have the effect of the GOP getting blamed if there is any government shutdown (which would happen anyway, I guess, but now Trump will say he is blameless.)
