The 2 verses have nothing to do with one another. 1 Timothy 3:16 has a lot of support. By comparision 1 John 5:7 has none. None verses alot. See the difference?
In other words you are totally given over to it. You have been captured.

I think you are on to something. SBG just through away his freedom for onlyism. He does not really practice textual criticism.

Has absoloutly nothing to do with it. You were trying to wrongly and foolishly compare 2 different verses one has good support for and some against. The other no real support whatsoever. If you knew textual criticism you would not have compared the different verses

I just read through this thread and you guys are way beyond me on specific issues with certain versions but the OP was about opinions on the ESV. I've used the ESV for 12 years. Was raised on the KJV. The ESV is associated with Calvinistic churches but that's probably due to marketing more than anything else. It isn't bad but reads kind of choppy. I found that when I tried to memorize in the ESV I found myself going back to KJV halfway through (not threw) a verse if I was already familiar with it. But I've worked with new Christians enough to observe that if they weren't raised on the KJV it is very difficult for them to start with it as an adult. I take to church whatever version the pastor is using and I think the ESV is fine.
I do actually prefer the KJV. But for a modern version just to read devotionally the NIV is easier to read. My wife likes the NIV and would always poke me in the ribs whenever the pastor would read a passage out of the KJV and then say "well what this means is" and sure enough his explanation was what the NIV said. One thing being raised on the KJV helped me with was that it was far easier for me when I started reading Puritans because I was familiar with that style. (I realize on this site that may not be considered a good thing.)
Yes. But what I meant was, and should have said, moved through freedom to thralldom.
