Female Sunday School Teachers

Is it ok for a female to lead a Sunday school class for mixed adults? I'am a member of a American Baptist USA church been a member there for about 4yrs really like the church but just don't know about this one. We lost our pastor to retirment this week an intrim steps in next week and our adult Sunday school teacher will be gone next Sunday and was told that a female would be leading the class for him. The bible says 1 Timothy 1:12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man, but to be in silence. NKJV
I asked the Deacon chairperson and he said yes she will teach the class.What do you think I should do? Go to the class, skip the class this one time and hope it doesn't come up again or just run!

Bryant Wright has a woman teaching a mixed adult Sunday School class at his church. Wright is the current president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and that denomination is considered to be more conservative than yours.

All I know is, Paul said that women are not to teach men. I have sat under a woman Sunday school teacher but prefer a man.

jeben, if your pastor will do it once, he'll do it again. This scenario is likely to repeat itself down the line.

I suggest a conversation with your pastor, so he knows exactly where you stand. But the decision is yours whether to live with it or leave.

Is this situation a test of fellowship for you? If it is, you already have your answer.

Why are we bent on suppressing women in ministry so much? Perhaps we need to learn to read Scripture through the eyes of both Jesus and Paul. You get my drift.

It is my understanding that most American Baptist Churches allow both women teachers as well as women preachers/pastors.

I'd rather have a woman teacher who knows and studies her Bible and teaches it humbly than a man teacher who thinks he knows something, is just filling a need, and does it because a "woman can't". Some of the best Bible teachers I have learned from have been women. Women did a pretty good job teaching Apollos and also Timothy in the Bible, as I recall.

I don't believe that was within the Church. It is not a question as to whether women are good teachers but what Scripture says!

Neither Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, or Scripture considered women to be property!

Paul is either writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit or he is not. You have to make up your mind which. If NO then throw out all his writings!

Is it all right for a woman to fill in for the Pastor if he is out? No not according to the bible. Then neither is it all right for a woman to fill in for a missing Sunday school teacher where men are concerned. Believe what the Lord has given.

So many preach who have the gift of pastor but not preacher.

So many teach who have the gift of helps but not teacher.

There are actually Christian School administrators who couldn't teach how to fold a paper bag, yet because they are "ordained" think they can tell a gifted and Godly teacher how to teach.

A number of years ago, I sat at a regional conference and listened to a "leader" spout the most absolute nonsense about teaching and how teachers should teach; those who were gifted teachers all just had to sit and put up with this nationally known no nothing.

Sorry for the attitudinal angry post; this is a really hot button issue with me.
