I seriously doubt they are alive. I hate to think so callously (i.e., like a terrorist) but there unfortunately doesn't seem to be a point to them holding the passengers alive this long without asking for ransom or using them for propaganda purposes.....actually the thought that all those people could possibly still be alive is exciting; but those poor family members, imagine what they're going through.
More likely, if the radar data they released early on about the climb above the maximum safe altitude of 43,000 feet is accurate, that was a mass murder maneuver. I would have expected, if the far-fetched idea that they were going to turn the plane into a weapon is actually true, they would have done it long before now.
Guess we'll eventually find out ... maybe.
