A Travelogue of the Interior: Finding Your Voice and God's Heart in the Psalms [LINK] . . .[KINDLE]

    by Karen Dabaghian (2015)

The Psalms were the hymnbook of the Hebrews, Jesus, and the early church. Today, we tend to pluck a verse here and there for a word of encouragement, but we have lost the Psalms as a guidebook for spiritual formation.

You can rediscover the Psalms as a traveler. Explore the terrain where your interior life and the Word of God intersect. Begin speaking to God with raw honesty. Listen as God replies with personal, life-giving words.

Above all, discover at the feet of the poet-king how to “taste and see that the LORD is good.”

    Something New

Noet Classics is offering a Freebie of the Month!

    For October the book is:

Plato’s Theaetetus and Sophist (2 vols.) [LINK]

Philosopher A.N. Whitehead once characterized Western philosophy as “a series of footnotes to Plato,” and he did so with good reason. Plato established the framework for a host of philosophical disciplines and his thought continues to shape discussion today.

In the Theaetetus and Sophist Plato tackles one of philosophy’s most enduring questions: “What is knowledge?”
This Loeb Classical Library edition provides both the Greek text and a definitive translation by H.N. Fowler.

"...this feeling of wonder shows that you are a philosopher, since wonder is the only beginning of philosophy.” ― Plato, Theaetetus

The Apostle: The Life of Paul [LINK] . . . [KINDLE]

    by John Pollock (2012)

The drama of a novel meets scholarship in leading Christian biographer John Pollock's classic work about one of the most transforming persons in history: the apostle Paul.

The Apostle masterfully combines careful adherence to biblical text, detailed research, and a storyteller's gift to create a book equally relevant for both casual readers fascinated by Paul's life and serious biblical scholars. Pollock begins his fast-moving narrative with Stephen's death and follows Paul through his conversion, missionary journeys, and eventual execution. Many will enjoy it simply as a satisfying and insightful true-life story, although maps and a study guide allow for deeper exploration. The Apostle was originally published in 1969, and this new edition marks the first significant revision in many years.

The Doctrine of the Atonement, as Taught by the Apostles [LINK]
    George Smeaton (1870)

    Normally $39.95
For a limited time get it FREE

This book deals with nearly every passage in the Gospels referring to the death of Christ.

The Doctrine of the Atonement, As Taught by the Apostles is a brilliant study, serving as both a doctrinal discourse on the atonement, and a treatise on the key passages in the New Testament. One of the features of this insightful book, which serves to make it so relevant and important to us today, is the author's examination and explanation of every passage of the Bible dealing with the atonement. A by-product of addressing each and every verse pertinent to the subject is that the book is redundant in a most effective way—delivering the same messages repeatedly from slightly different perspectives, thus enhancing, embellishing, and deepening the reader's understanding of the gospel. Smeaton’s comprehensive biblical approach to the doctrine of the atonement makes an important book for understanding a scriptural approach to the various theories of atonement, as well as a clear-headed overview of the issues surrounding the current debate over the atonement.

Healing for Damaged Emotions [LINK] . . . [KINDLE]
    by David A. Seamands (1991, 2015)

Events in our lives, both good and bad, form rings in us like the rings in a tree. Each ring records memories that affect our feelings, our relationships, and our thoughts about God.

In this classic work, David Seamands encourages us to live compassionately with ourselves as we allow the Holy Spirit to heal our past. As he helps us name hurdles in our lives—such as guilt, poor self-worth, and perfectionism—he shows us how we can find freedom from our pain and enjoy the abundant life God wants for us.

The late David Seamands was a pastor, missionary, and professor emeritus and counselor-in-residence at Asbury Theological Seminary. He authored several books, including If Only, Putting Away Childish Things, and Freedom from the Performance Trap.

Seeing through the Fog: Hope When Your World Falls Apart [LINK] . . . [KINDLE]
    by Ed Dobson

An exploration of identity and faith, Seeing Through the Fog invites readers to a vibrant life, an expectant life, a life of joy in each new morning.

Pastor Ed Dobson has spent his life preaching sermons, but this book is not a sermon. He has spent more than ten years with a debilitating illness, but this book is not about grief. He has found joy in the midst of sorrow, but this book is not about looking on the bright side.

Seeing Through the Fog is about living well when you realize you can’t live forever. It is about having gratitude for each sunrise, birthday, and moment of knowing God more. It is about holding hope when circumstances hold pain.

With stories, wisdom and unique content distinct from the popular film series about Ed, Seeing Through the Fog will encourage readers in their own difficulties and give them hope for their future.

Lexham English Bible (LEB) with Audio New Testament (2012) [LINK]

The LEB is a new translation of the Bible into English. It clearly communicates the meaning of the original languages and gives you a clear English translation, and shows you how it gets there. It is one of the components in a suite of resources from Lexham Press which connect the original language texts to formal translations.
    Why a new translation?
New translations of the Bible emerge from a quest for greater accuracy, from new scholarly discoveries in linguistics and semantics, from recent advances in lexicography, from new archaeological discoveries, and from a greater understanding of the evolution of the English language.

    How can I trust it?
The Lexham English Bible, used with an interlinear, reveals the entire translation process. Follow the path from the original language, to the interlinear, to the English translation, and then back again with a reverse interlinear. You'll never find yourself wondering why the LEB translates a word or phrase a certain way. Identify idioms. Discover the tricky texts. See the difficult lexicographical choices. It's all right there.
The entire translation process is focused and transparent. It was developed through an interlinear process using Logos Bible Software. At any point, you can work from the original languages to the LEB, or from the LEB back to the original languages.
The LEB closely follows the original while remaining readable in contemporary English. The style of the translation is relatively literal, which stems from the desire to have the English translation correspond transparently to the original language text. The translators attempt—within these constraints—to produce a clear and readable English translation instead of a woodenly literal one.
Some words and phrases are difficult to translate, and the LEB is careful to mark these instances:
    • Supplied words are noted with italics. These are words in English implied by English style or structure, or they are grammaticalized from the original language. They may not be found in the original language, but are needed for a sentence to make sense in English.
    • Idioms are noted with corner brackets. Words and phrases that don't convey the meaning when translated literally are idiomatic, and with the LEB you can easily identify them.
Every time the LEB encounters a difficult word or phrase, you'll know—and you'll be able to dig deeper behind the translation itself to find the meaning in the text of the original language.

Excerpts from the Abraham Kuyper Collected Works in Public Theology (3 vols.) [LINK]
by Abraham Kuyper, Lexham Press (2015)

    Individual Titles
These three excerpts from the Abraham Kuyper Collected Works in Public Theology Collection introduce Kuyper’s thoughts on education, public theology, and the church.

Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) was one of the most extraordinary individuals of his time: the founder of a political party, a university, and a Reformed denomination, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, and an incredibly prolific author on a dizzying array of subjects. Despite these accomplishments, his importance and contribution have not been widely recognized in North America.

    This is beginning to change.
A resurgence of interest in Kuyper, his life, and his writings is taking hold as Christians search for ways to faithfully understand and engage culture.

Lexham Press is pleased to announce the publication of a major series of new translations of Kuyper’s writings in public theology. Created in partnership with the Kuyper Translation Society and the Acton Institute, the Abraham Kuyper Collected Works in Public Theology will mark a historic moment in Kuyper studies, and we hope it will deepen and enrich the church’s interest and engagement in public theology.

    ************
Comment: Personally I find these excerpts from Abraham Kuyper display a flowery, upper class style of dialogue typical of a 19th century educator. Although it is tedious to wade through the well thought-out arguments presented, there is some meat mixed in among the vegetables.

    Jump [Vyrso] . . . [Kindle]
    by Efrem Smith (2010)

Jump is a powerful guide to becoming a vehicle of compassion, reconciliation, and transformation in our world.
Life is all about jumps. We jump from high school to college, school to the professional world, dating to marriage. Each leap launches us to new levels.
Even though we can't see what's on the other side of the wall, our faith jumps are about trusting that God is there. We experience the liberation when we jump into the arms of our Savior, then into a church family, and then into a world desperately in need.
Efrem Smith presents fresh insights into how Christians can say yes to the jump that takes them deeper into a loving, devotional, intimate life with God.

Hermeneia: Matthew 1–7: A Commentary on Matthew 1–7 [LINK]
    by Ulrich Luz (2007)

    Normally $60

The birth narrative, the baptism and temptation of Jesus, the beginnings of his Galilean ministry, and the Sermon on the Mount are all brilliantly illumined by Ulrich Luz’s expert textual and historical-critical analysis and theological commentary. Luz brings special attention to the subsequent history of Christian appropriation of Matthew in homiletical and artistic interpretation, and addresses the terrible legacy of Christian anti-Judaism. This volume completes Luz’s 3-volume commentary on the Gospel of Matthew in the Hermeneia series. A translation of the earlier German edition of Matthew 1–7 appeared in Fortress Press’ Continental Commentary series. The text has been thoroughly revised and updated.

The Gallic War - 2 vols. (Latin with English translation, 1919) [LINK]
    by Julius Caesar

    Normally $17.95

Julius Caesar is credited with transforming the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Caesar’s alliance with Pompey and Crassus (known as the first triumvirate) opposed the Republican elements in the senate, seeking to institute a more populist government. As a general, Caesar conquered the territory of Gaul and extended the Roman territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. When the senate opposed his continuing military campaign, Caesar was led into a civil war, which he won. Having defeated Pompey (who had sided with the senate during the civil war), Caesar became the leader of Rome. He ruled as dictator, suspending the Republican constitution, until his assassination in 44 BC.

Caesar’s accounts of his military campaigns remain classics of Latin prose and important sources for historical reconstructions of the period. The Gallic War recounts Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and his attacks on southern Britain.

The Noet edition of this volume is fully indexed and tagged, allowing for near-instant search results. This volume links to the other books in your Noet library, allowing you to cross-reference with a click. Near-instant searches allow you to jump to important sections in Caesar’s work.

    Fight: A Christian Case for Non-Violence [LINK] . . . [Kindle]
    by Preston Sprinkle

“I’m still an evangelical Christian. And I’m not Amish, Quaker, or Mennonite. I own several guns and still believe that the smell of a recently fired shotgun on a crisp fall morning comes darn near close to paradise. But I’ve tried my hardest to understand God’s Word and the diverse perspectives of those who read it. And the more I study, the more I discuss, the more I’ve become convinced: Christians shouldn’t kill or use violence—not even in war.”
With these words, Preston Sprinkle jumps into a compelling, passionate study of God’s perspective on violence. Examining both the seemingly angry, violent God of the Old Testament and the peacemaking Jesus of the New, Preston takes us back to Scripture to discern how God has really called His people to think and live in the midst of a violent world. He asks us to join him in inviting God to challenge our presuppositions, to set aside our biases and backgrounds and fears … and to seek above all else to faithfully follow the Savior who humbly submitted to God in the face of injustice and violence.

Free Logos Facebook Offer for November

    George Müller of Bristol [LINK]
    by Arthur T. Pierson (1899)

    Normally $44.95

Müller’s view of faith was simple, almost childlike. He believed that everything he did was to be guided by Scripture. He was no mystic, refusing to be lead by impressions or even to take Scripture out of context. He believed that living by impressions would lead Christians into much error. Rather, as a man of confidence in the Bible, he found out what God had promised and rested on it. Faith, to Müller, was finding out what God said or what he permitted, and doggedly hanging on to the promises even when circumstances were screaming otherwise. Müller believed that God did not intend for him to get into debt of any kind. Nor did he solicit for money. … He never once wrote a letter to ask people to give to him or to the ministries under his charge, never approached businessmen or foundations for funds, and never appealed to churches to support the work. All was done in answer to prayer. He would refuse to disclose the present state of the funds, even when asked, because he believed it might be seen as a subtle appeal for money. He would tell of the activity of God in supplying what was needed in retrospect, as a way of honoring God. And he would not borrow from one fund to supply the other when monies were designated for a particular aspect of his work. His was a life of faith in the strictest meaning of that word. I believe the driving impetus for Müller’s faith is found in his explanation of why the orphanage was started. Müller’s meditations on the difficulties of Christians with financial problems, was used by God, as he stated.
...to awaken in my heart the desire of setting before the church at large, and before the world, a proof that He has not in the least changed; and this seemed to me best done by the establishing of an orphan house. It needed to be something which could be seen, even by the natural eye. Now, if I, a poor man, simply by prayer and faith, obtained, without asking any individual, the means for establishing and carrying on an orphan house, there would be something which, with the Lord’s blessing, might be instrumental in strengthening the faith of the children of God, besides being a testimony to the consciences of the unconverted of the reality of the things of God.
Above all other things, Müller wished to be a living demonstration that God is alive and answers prayer just as he said he would in the Bible.

I am not familiar with the LOGOS books at all. I love to read, so this will serve a huge purpose in my life. I'll be the first person to admit that I lack appropriate reading material. I'd love to read something that would help me connect more with God. I can't remember the last time that I picked up a book about the Lord.
