Recent studies have increasingly downplayed, and in a few cases even wholly denied, the influence of Martin Luther’s theology of Law and Gospel on early English evangelicals such as William Tyndale. The impact of a late medieval Augustinian renaissance, Erasmian Humanism, the Reformed tradition, and Lollardy have all but eclipsed the more central role once attributed to Luther. In this text Michael Whiting examines these claims with a thorough reevaluation of Luther’s theology of Law and Gospel in its historical context—spanning twenty-five years, something entirely lacking in all previous studies. Using extensive research of primary sources, paying acute attention to the larger historical narrative, and remaining in dialogue with secondary scholarship, Whiting argues that scholars have often oversimplified Luther’s theology of Law and Gospel. His argument continues that scholars have thus wrongly diminished Luther’s very significant, even principal, influence upon first-generation evangelicals William Tyndale, John Frith, and Robert Barnes during the English Reformation of the 1520s and 1530s.

Lexham English Bible (LEB) with Audio New Testament (2012) [LINK]

The LEB is a new translation of the Bible into English. It clearly communicates the meaning of the original languages and gives you a clear English translation, and shows you how it gets there. It is one of the components in a suite of resources from Lexham Press which connect the original language texts to formal translations.
Why a new translation?
New translations of the Bible emerge from a quest for greater accuracy, from new scholarly discoveries in linguistics and semantics, from recent advances in lexicography, from new archaeological discoveries, and from a greater understanding of the evolution of the English language.

How can I trust it?
The Lexham English Bible, used with an interlinear, reveals the entire translation process. Follow the path from the original language, to the interlinear, to the English translation, and then back again with a reverse interlinear. You'll never find yourself wondering why the LEB translates a word or phrase a certain way. Identify idioms. Discover the tricky texts. See the difficult lexicographical choices. It's all right there.
The entire translation process is focused and transparent. It was developed through an interlinear process using Logos Bible Software. At any point, you can work from the original languages to the LEB, or from the LEB back to the original languages.
The LEB closely follows the original while remaining readable in contemporary English. The style of the translation is relatively literal, which stems from the desire to have the English translation correspond transparently to the original language text. The translators attempt—within these constraints—to produce a clear and readable English translation instead of a woodenly literal one.
Some words and phrases are difficult to translate, and the LEB is careful to mark these instances:

• Supplied words are noted with italics. These are words in English implied by English style or structure, or they are grammaticalized from the original language. They may not be found in the original language, but are needed for a sentence to make sense in English.
• Idioms are noted with corner brackets. Words and phrases that don't convey the meaning when translated literally are idiomatic, and with the LEB you can easily identify them.

Every time the LEB encounters a difficult word or phrase, you'll know—and you'll be able to dig deeper behind the translation itself to find the meaning in the text of the original language.

Despite these accomplishments, his importance and contribution have not been widely recognized in North America.

This is beginning to change.

Comment: Personally I find these excerpts from Abraham Kuyper display a flowery, upper class style of dialogue typical of a 19th century educator. Although it is tedious to wade through the well thought-out arguments presented, there is some meat mixed in among the vegetables.

Julius Caesar is credited with transforming the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Caesar’s alliance with Pompey and Crassus (known as the first triumvirate) opposed the Republican elements in the senate, seeking to institute a more populist government. As a general, Caesar conquered the territory of Gaul and extended the Roman territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. When the senate opposed his continuing military campaign, Caesar was led into a civil war, which he won. Having defeated Pompey (who had sided with the senate during the civil war), Caesar became the leader of Rome. He ruled as dictator, suspending the Republican constitution, until his assassination in 44 BC.

Caesar’s accounts of his military campaigns remain classics of Latin prose and important sources for historical reconstructions of the period. The Gallic War recounts Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and his attacks on southern Britain.

Müller’s view of faith was simple, almost childlike. He believed that everything he did was to be guided by Scripture. He was no mystic, refusing to be lead by impressions or even to take Scripture out of context. He believed that living by impressions would lead Christians into much error. Rather, as a man of confidence in the Bible, he found out what God had promised and rested on it. Faith, to Müller, was finding out what God said or what he permitted, and doggedly hanging on to the promises even when circumstances were screaming otherwise. Müller believed that God did not intend for him to get into debt of any kind. Nor did he solicit for money. … He never once wrote a letter to ask people to give to him or to the ministries under his charge, never approached businessmen or foundations for funds, and never appealed to churches to support the work. All was done in answer to prayer. He would refuse to disclose the present state of the funds, even when asked, because he believed it might be seen as a subtle appeal for money. He would tell of the activity of God in supplying what was needed in retrospect, as a way of honoring God. And he would not borrow from one fund to supply the other when monies were designated for a particular aspect of his work. His was a life of faith in the strictest meaning of that word. I believe the driving impetus for Müller’s faith is found in his explanation of why the orphanage was started. Müller’s meditations on the difficulties of Christians with financial problems, was used by God, as he stated.

...to awaken in my heart the desire of setting before the church at large, and before the world, a proof that He has not in the least changed; and this seemed to me best done by the establishing of an orphan house. It needed to be something which could be seen, even by the natural eye. Now, if I, a poor man, simply by prayer and faith, obtained, without asking any individual, the means for establishing and carrying on an orphan house, there would be something which, with the Lord’s blessing, might be instrumental in strengthening the faith of the children of God, besides being a testimony to the consciences of the unconverted of the reality of the things of God.​

Above all other things, Müller wished to be a living demonstration that God is alive and answers prayer just as he said he would in the Bible.

I am not familiar with the LOGOS books at all. I love to read, so this will serve a huge purpose in my life. I'll be the first person to admit that I lack appropriate reading material. I'd love to read something that would help me connect more with God. I can't remember the last time that I picked up a book about the Lord.
