Why is there a statute of a man who has no reason to be celebrated in the first place?

the answer to you question is "He is a martyr" to some!

I wonder what would happen if a group of people who opposed such a statue - would the city or state take it down.
Naw- nothing like that would ever happen in this country.

Because there is an epidemic of stupid in this nation. Stupid people doing stupid things and stupider people who know better going along with them.

It is interesting how people choose their "heros". Often the man has little to do with the ideals of the statues erected in their honor.

One of my childhood heros was Francis Marion. I still like the image I grew fond of. But the truth is while he was an American hero (particularly for a SC guy like me) he really was not a good man.

He would be against vaccine passports.
I like him. He was a warrior. Hard to switch back and forth between killing and being all nice and fuzzy.

No. He would be hunting people down and jabbing them with the needle. He was vicious, but he was a smart man and a patriot. :Biggrin
If the govt ordered vaccines and tried to force them, he would be in direct opposition to them.

Depends on the government. He was loyal to his countrymen, just not England. Most likely he would have seen the vaccine rejections as traitors to his countrymen and a threat to the revolution.

He would have probably just killed them so the country would survive. Like I said, not a particularly good man. Just good at what he did.

I don't think you have read the 900 page biography of him have you? He would see any edict from a central govt as a tyranical order and rebel against it. It could be debated how he would handle the order if it came from the govt of S.C.

I have. But he was not a foolish man. He would have realized the war would have been lost should the vaccine rejections prevail. He would have seen them as an inside threat.

BTW, there are statues, a college and a hotel named after Marion. We have to remember they symbolize his contributions (and a type of mythology) not his flaws.

We don't say "now son, this statue is dedicated to raping women and hunting humans for spirt because of their race". We say this statue us dedicated to the efforts of a man who helped our nation gain its independence.

In the end it is the idea, not the man, that is remembered.

George Floyd was, by all accounts, a drug user and career criminal. But he represents to many the struggle against brutality.

I think they could have tossed a dart and found a better representation of those ideas. But that's not for me to decide.

I'm with Robert E. Lee....statues?...we don't need mo stinking statues (paraphrasing). :Whistling

There are statues which can be questionable if dependent on the men. George Floyd, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Francis Marion, etc.

But ultimately it is the community that should decide. If your community wants a statue of Hitler...go for it. You pay for it, your community will probably suffer consequences....but this is a free nation.

Freedom of expression is only valuable when what is expressed is controversial. Nobody complains when everybody agrees.
