GOP Should Shut Down Senate

Conservative leader Gary Bauer warned Wednesday that Democratic leaders in Congress will try to ram through their unpopular health-care reform plan later this fall, employing a little-used tactic first conceived as a way to maneuver around the budget deficit battles of the 1980s.

“I’m afraid that they (Democratic leaders) will do it because I’m convinced that the people running America are intent on changing America in ways that will not be reversible,” Bauer told CNSNews.com. .....

............“The only remedy for this, is for the minority in Congress...to make it clear that if this is used on such a major piece of legislation, that the minority Republicans will literally shut down the Senate by using parliamentary maneuvers, and so forth--so that literally nothing else will pass this year and next, until there is another election,” Bauer, who is president of the group American Values, said. ...

The GOP is the party of obstructionism, after all. They are quickly becoming the crybabies of America. Or better yet, the death cries of a dying dinosaur. Maybe we can bring back the Whig Party. Can't be any worse. Or maybe the Bull Moose Party.

Like it or not the American people elected this President and this Senate.

It is wrong when any party uses cheap political tactics to override the will of the nation.

I'm not sure the will of the nation is in favor of government run health care.

Possibly not - but they should have thought of that before they voted democrat.

We need to live with the results of the political process, not try to subvert it with cheap tricks.

They was deserved widespread condemnation when the Democrats used this kind of nonsense.

So many here cling to the Declaration of Independence claim that governments get their power from the consent of the governed. If that is the case this President and Congress have the nation's consent to govern. It can't govern is cheap obstructionist tactics are being employed.

Let it govern, then change the consent in the next election.

That is baloney. Just because he was elected does not mean he gets to do what ever he wants. Hence the checks and balances of our government.

Let the checks and balances work - shutting down the Senate with a cheap trick is not letting them work, it is obstructing.

Ignoring the fact that the dems will use a procedure to pass this bill because they cannot get the votes does nothing to support your argument.

Perhaps you haven't noticed that the current president has sidestepped the checks and balances system with his appointment of czars.

Then the dems need to simply put it to a vote or drop it.

Fair enough - but does one cheap trick (A trick which, if I am not mistaken, was invented by Republicans) deserve another? Should the Republican minority really shut down the Senate?

For RAdam:

Same reply - does one cheap trick deserve another.

Do we really want a government that runs at the level of cheap political tricks?

Want kind of precedent will that set for the day when (supposed) conservatives return to power and the Democrat minority decides to shut down the Senate?

Your characterization makes an assumption I doubt you can back up. It is not simply a cheap trick to get their way it is a measure to stop their cheap trick and to force a vote. In the end shutting down the Senate will fall on the dems. They can either bring it to a legitimate vote or allow the Senate to shut down.

Fair enough, I will play along. Will you say the same when the Republicans in power in a few years try to force a vote through and the Democrats shut down the Senate?

All of a sudden, cheap politics, which we rightly condemned for so long, are acceptable?

Apologies - I am wasting too much time here. Take care.

We should never try to skirt around a vote on health care of Supreme Court nominees. I have never supported that. And I am not a republican.

Only if the GOP finds the intestinal fortitude to do it.:tonofbricks:
The GOP is a group of spineless thieves, much like their Democratic counterparts. They can flap their jaws all they want (sort of like using abortion and family values at election time), but when they stop government long enough for social security checks to stop, or medicare or medicade to stop, veterans benefits, or retired military pay, guess what, they will show what they really are, a lot of hot air. Hope Senators Vitter, Ensign, and Craig can take time out of their extra marital activites to participate in the slow down.

No, here is a better idea. Lets make the Constitution Party and Libertarian Party the two main parties, take over the Senate, and govern like we should be governed. I am sure their is room in the federal pen for the former Senate members.
