Where we live very few of the pastors will wear suits or even ties. I was talking with a friend of mine who is an ifb pastor just this week and he made the statement that he was going to get his first tie so he would have one for funerals.
While I would resist any formal dress code we have to realize that people have expectations. He realizes that when he preaches a funeral wearing a tie is not something he has to do to follow a dress code but something he should do to show respect for the deceased and their family.
I get ribbed from time to time because I won’t preach without a tie. My own pastor seldom wears one but I just can’t preach without one and here is why. Some people, not all, and I am not saying they are right, but some people expect the preacher to be wearing a tie. I want them to listen to what I have to say. If I don’t wear the tie then my fear is that some members of the congregation might write me off and not listen to what I have to say. Wearing a tie does not cost me much and if not wearing it kept someone from hearing the gospel, well I just would not want that. Now the other side of that of course is that someone else might write me off and not listen because I am wearing a tie. I guess we kind of have to follow the spirit of God.
Annsni, to really answer your question – Get a jacket that fits well and is comfortable. Don’t try to be cheap, he is only going to wear it on Sunday so it should last many years. Go to a reputable men’s store and buy the best you can afford. I would go to Brooks Brothers if you can afford it, Men’s Warehouse if you can’t. Your in NY, you probably have lots more options than I have. But go somewhere that specializes in men’s wear and someplace that can make alterations in house. Make sure they measure him and get the jacket tailored for your husband. He can explain to them why he needs a range of motion and bring a guitar with you if you want. I don’t know what your husband looks like but jackets off the rack are made to fit, well the rack. If you want it to fit well get it tailored. The bottom line is that you do not want the way he looks to distract anyone from the message of the music. Go to a professional.

I believe there are some people that will listen to what I have to say and listen with a level of attentiveness and respect that would not if I did not have the tie on. Now there are certainly cases where the opposite would also be true.

Wonder if the priests thought their robes (prescribed by God) were restrictive, of course they weren't in the band :smilewinkgrin:
This thread cracks me up. I was "confronted" due to low spirituality years ago because I wore cowboy boots and a nice sweater and tie - "I SHOULD BE WEARING A SUIT." was the reason!
Would have had I had the money to buy it :tonofbricks:At the time we were living on pancakes and spuds and very little else.

What you are saying still does not make sense to me though. You admit the problem could be on both sides of the fence, but then your actions say that the people who might listen to you if you have a tie on are more important than those who might turn you off if you have a tie on.
Personally, I believe the Holy Spirit can complete His work in the heart of people no matter what I wear or do not wear.

I play lead worship from the keyboard too. I had about 5 or 6 vests of different styles and colors made. I typically wear a long sleeved shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow. The vests can work with or without a tie (I use them both ways) and can be as dressy or casual as you like. After I started wearing them, some people asked why. I told them about the sweat issue and directing the choir, and that was the end of it. The vest can be as dressy as a jacket, with lapels or without, in any number of combinations and fabrics. After I started weraing them about 10 years ago, no one has ever mentioned anything again, and I've served in several churches. Just a thought.

May I ask a question? Why do I get mocked if I require a certain dress code on the platform? Am I wrong? Did I mock your "standards?" When our President meets a dignitary from another country does he wear jeans or have his sleeves rolled up to his elbows? NO, and I happen to thibk my Lord is a whole lot more important than any earthly king. If you want to go to your church and wear your gym clothes so be it but don't be critical of those that don't.
