So, when I defend my Caucasian race, I'm now accused of being a racist? When, as an American, I'm angry over illegal aliens, I'm racist? When, as an American, I want English to be the national language, I'm racist? When, as an American, I want the military on our borders & illegal aliens deported, I'm racist?
Yes, that is exactly correct. Any other race can demean the Caucasian race in any fashion whatever and it is acceptable. Any lie can be told about our founding fathers, anything at all. But if one of us has the temerity to speak out against, oh let's say, the wonderful fiction called "Roots", or to propose that foreigners enter America legally and actually learn to speak English, why we are just a bunch of racists.

HOGWASH!!

You make it sound like whites not being a majority in the US is something that is of concern. Please please PLEASE tell me this is not how you really feel.
It ought to be of concern, because when it happens there will be no more America as we know it. I feel very sorry for my children and grandchildren.

Yeh, I'm bothered by this, too. "America" is certainly not restricted to white people of European ancestry. *shiver*

As to assimilation . . . I don't see what's so darned good about assimilation. And this exchange:

Johnv:Come to think of it, I don't even know what the deal is with assimilation. That's got absolutelly nothing to do with the topic. The English didn't assimilate when they came over, neither did the Dutch. The ethnic and cultural differences between the 1600's the 1700's and the 1800's are dramatically different, in large part because of the influx of different ethnicities. Today, we think of those things as american, but then, they were far from.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They spoke English or if they didn't when they got off the boat, they quickly learned. They came over legally, not sneaking over the borders. They wanted to be AMERICANS, not hyphenated-Americans, i.e. African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans.
interests me. Who already spoke English? The English and the Dutch? Well lah-di-dah. But they didn't assimilate into American culture, now, did they? Hardly. But let's even leave out for a moment that Europeans were not the first to lay claim to this land we live on. The ridiculousness of a defense like "they already spoke English" is pretty high - the only reason we want people to speak English now is because the "first" people here did. They didn't assimilate because they didn't have to. Everyone else was expected to assimilate into their culture. The English didn't assimilate, not because they already spoke English, but because they made themselves the dominant culture. Maybe I just didn't understand what you were saying with that, or who you meant by "they," SheEagle, but based on it as a response to what John said, it sounded like you were talking about the English and the Dutch . . . .

Anyway, assimilation is basically a nice way of saying "civilized." It's a new way, a more - dare I say it - politically correct way to say "you're culture is backwards and wrong, ours is the way to live." Whatever people think about picking up some cultural norms of the society into which you choose to move, insisting on assimiliation is pretty egotistical.

From Death of the West by Pat Buchanan

In his chapter La Reconquista, Buchanan contends that an invasion of the United States is taking place and that America now harbors a “nation within a nation.”

• There are 30 million foreign born in the U.S. today, and between 9 and 11 million illegal aliens, or as many undocumented aliens in the U.S. as there are people in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Mexico is exporting its poor and unemployed for U.S. taxpayers to employ and educate. Radical and militant Hispanics and Mexican leaders alike believe this will lead to the cultural and demographic recapture of the Southwest from America, reversing the results of The Mexican War.

• By supporting open borders, the GOP is committing suicide. First-time Hispanic voters chose Clinton 15-1 over Dole. Of the seven major immigration states -- Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Texas and Florida -- Mr. Bush lost five, and perhaps six. Of the 10 states with the smallest share of immigrants, Bush won all 10.

• European-Americans are a minority in America’s most populous state, California, and by 2004, will be a minority in Texas.

The political agenda of California Hispanics includes race welfare for illegal aliens, racial preferences, bilingual education, open borders, dual citizenship, Cinqo de Mayo as a California holiday, and, in one case, replacing a statue of an American hero of the Mexican War with the Aztec god Quetzacoatl.

White Americans are fleeing California at the rate of 100,000 a year.

• MeCHA, the student organization that claims chapters on hundreds of campuses has a program that reads like a Mexican version of the agenda of the white-supremacist Aryan Nation.

• In 2001, an Office for Mexicans Abroad in Mexico was providing survival kits with everything from dried meat to anti-diarrhea pills to condoms to Mexicans setting off to break in to the United States .

• As of 2000, there were 8.4 million foreign born in California, as many foreign born as there are people in New Jersey, a primary cause of the state energy and schools crisis.

Among Third World immigrants, poverty rates and incarceration rates are double and triple what they are among native-born Americans.

And slowly, the most powerful & prosperous nation on earth fades into another Third World Country..... :(

That's interesting, considering California has a more prosperous economy than most of Europe and Asia.

Perhaps some of those who believe this could explain what they believe "America as we know it" is and what, specifically, is bad about a changing face/color of America? I think some of us are hearing it as "America is for white Europeans, and we want it to stay that way" and that implication is to what we're reacting negatively.

INS: 7 million illegal immigrants in United States
Mexicans make up nearly 70 percent of total, figures show
From Terry Frieden
CNN
Saturday, February 1, 2003 Posted: 12:48 AM EST (0548 GMT)
------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- More than a million illegal immigrants have slipped into the United States in the past few years, raising the total in the country to 7 million, the Immigration and Naturalization Service said Friday.

The vast majority of the illegal immigrants are from Mexico, officials said.

The numbers are based on census figures from 2000 and the agency's own statistics. They are the first official government figures on illegal immigration released since 1996.

The figures show that between October 1996 and January 2000, the number of illegal immigrants grew from about 5.8 million to about 7 million, an increase of more than 300,000 annually.

The proportion of the illegal immigrants who are Mexican has increased to nearly 70 percent from less than 60 percent, the INS said.

Although California is home to the most undocumented immigrants, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina have the greatest rate of increase, the figures showed.

Justice Department spokesman Jorge Martinez said the latest figures are believed to be more accurate than previous ones because they reflect new methods used to determine trends in the entry and departure of undocumented residents.

but what are you upset about - illegal immigration or a hispanic majority - at the moment you appear to be conflating these issues and it is confusing.

Okay, now we get to hear from somebody that lives in the middle of "Little Mexico," as people here like to call it.

I don't mind anyone wanting to live in this country. I don't mind people wanting to speak the language they were taught as children. I don't mind people wanting to celebrate the culture of their ancestors.

Here is what I do mind:

I mind when people come to this country illegally, take jobs away from legal Americans, of any color, and don't pay taxes.

I mind when people absolutely refuse to learn any English, but expect us to know their language, what ever it be.

I mind when people get mad at me if I want to celebrate my cultural heritage. My ancestors fought and died for the South during the Civil War. Why can't I fly their flag without being labeled a racist? Do we call people who fly the Union Jack dirty Loyalists?

I would also like to point out that it's too late to change America's language back to the original Indian tongues; there were many of them. Also, Indians weren't the first people here anyway, so why should we have taken their language? I can say that since I am of Cherokee blood.

I want to point out that, the vast, vast majority of Americans speak English. If we all want to get along and communicate, we should all know a common language, especially within our own country. Again, I think it's great for people to know more than one language, but for the sake of sanity within our own borders, we should all know English.

BTW, if people are so bent up about wanting to remain the dominant race, I have a sure-fire way to make it happen. Have more kids! If you're still upset about the lopsided population shift, you have no one to blame but yourself...and, I guess your spouse, too. :D

God Bless. Bro. James

One more comment regarding Mexican people...Ilove thier food! Houston has more Mexican restaurants than any other city in the world. They are the best.

I hate the way they drive. Either way too slow or way too fast. Well, that is my moment for generalizations. :D

You still seem to be confusing the issue.

You do realize that...

"Most illegal immigrants are Mexican"

AND

"Most Mexican-Americans are legal"

are not contradictory terms, don't you?

The article and the thrust of this conversation was about the second point. You're attacking it by attacking the first point.

Bro. Glen, why do you think so many Old Baptists have large families? So we can have members.

New Zogby Poll

Mexicans Say Southwest U.S. Belongs to Them;
Shouldn't Need Permission to Enter U.S.
Download Full Report

Americans and Mexicans have widely divergent views of border issues, according to a new poll by Zogby International.

Zogby found that a large majority of the Mexican population believes the southwest territory of the U.S. rightfully belongs to Mexico, and that Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without first obtaining U.S. permission. By contrast, Zogby's survey of Americans conducted within a few days of the Mexican poll shows a large majority supports reducing immigration levels and wants the military deployed along the border to protect the U.S. from illegal immigration.

Zogby's poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement, "the territory of the United States' Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico." Only 28 percent disagree, and 14 percent are unsure.

A similar majority, 57 percent, agree with the statement, "Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without U.S. permission," while 35 percent disagree. Seven percent are unsure.

The survey has a margin of error of 3.5 percent. The Mexico portion of the survey was conducted in Spanish between May 25 and May 26 among 801 adults chosen at random throughout Mexico. The poll was commissioned by Americans for Immigration Control, Inc. (AIC), which advocates increased restrictions on immigration.

"There is obviously a large and significant gap between the attitudes of Americans and Mexicans," said Robert Goldsborough, AIC president. "While most Americans want immigration reduced, most Mexicans think they don't even need permission to enter our country. The poll clearly shows there is less common ground for immigration negotiations between Mexico and the U.S. than the leaders think. Support for a porous border and a loose migration policy occurs only on the Mexican side, not in the U.S."

I agree with Johnv.

I wonder what the founding fathers would think about our immigration laws. I think they would be disgusted by how many people we turn away at the borders.

Yes, we should be careful about who we let in. But, what gives us the right to say who can or can't go where they want?

This country was established for the relief of the oppressed and I think it should stay that way.

Explorers and settlers were the first to follow Columbus. Most of the Spanish and Portuguese went to Mexico, Central and South America; most of the French migrated to Canada; and the English, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Dutch, and Germans settled in what became the 13 original colonies. They wrote the Declaration of Independence, fought the Revolution, fashioned the Constitution with its Bill of Rights, and fixed the cultural, economic, and political patterns of the country. The government and society they created came from their own Northern and West European cultural and political background.

It was an English speaking nation with free institutions based upon Anglo-Saxon culture and English common law.

Our Founding Fathers did not encourage unlimited immigration. George Washington felt that immigration should be limited to "useful mechanics and some particular descriptions of men or professions."

Thomas Jefferson saw the new government as a unique combination of the freest elements of English law and political custom. He was concerned that unrestricted immigration of peoples from lands unacquainted with the principle of representative government might undo the careful work of our Founding Fathers. "Yet," he said prophetically, "from such we are to expect the greatest number of immigrants."

Even if these immigrants could throw off the principles of the governments they left, Jefferson feared that they would merely pass"from one extreme to the other. It would be a miracle were they to stop precisely at the point of temperate liberty." He added, "In proportion to their numbers, they will share legislation with us. They will infuse into it their spirit, warp or bias its direction and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent mass."[snip]

Although opposed to mass immigration, the Founding Fathers did not prevent or discourage it by federal legislation. They left it to the states individually to regulate and control immigration according to their specific needs.

Immigration grew at an acceptable and useful rate, and the population rose from 26,000 in 1640 to 2,500,000 in 1775, to 12,866,000 by 1830. Westward expanding America needed able men to work the mines, lay the rails, till the soil, and build the towns, and so during these growing years, immigration was actively encouraged. In 1834, Congress aided Polish exiles to settle in Illinois and Michigan. The Homestead Act of 1862 drew others through cheap land grants. Entrepreneurs advertised abroad for immigrant workers for the expanding mills, mines, factories, and farms.

Between 1830 and 1880, a total of 10,189,000 immigrants came to the United States. Of these, 8,989,800 were from Northern Europe, and 654,000 were from Canada and Newfoundland.

[snip]

Today, the annual tidal wave of over a million immigrants (legal and illegal) is endangering our American way of life. Currently, fewer than 15% of our immigrants come from Europe and share the heritage that made America strong. A majority of today's immigrants are (consciously or unconsciously) undermining our customs, our culture, our language, and our institutions. Instead of remaining in their native lands and emulating the United States, they are descending upon our shores and trying to reshape the United States into the image of the lands they forsook.
