How does your church allow new teachers to start teaching?

In my Calvinist Baptist church the philosophy is much different than my wife's IFB church. At this church they have elders and are run that way. New prospects are given position papers to take home and fill out so the elders know where they stand. Then if qualified they allow them to start in the basics as a sub.

My old church as long as you were a member and the pastor liked you he gave you a shot to teach. The problem I had was not when I officially taught but when I did not teach. SS was discussion based and some of my comments introduced Calvinism which the church was against. Also I did not carry a KJV with me when I did not teach which made people uncomfortable.

So how does your church work? My new church does a great job at filtering out heresy and bad teaching. A IFB baptist who is married to a Reformed baptist would not even get a shot to teach here.

A new member must wait a year. This gives the church time to know the person and his doctrine.

Their doctrine needs to be in line with the doctrine of the Church (there is, of course, room for differences in some areas). The person has to be able to justify their posistion via Scripture and not jump quickly to conclusions or be blown by every wind of doctrine (which reminds me of our last exchange...do you have an answer yet?).

The man has to meet the qualifications, at least, of maintaining his household. As a general standard, no one who has been divorced except under specific instances with several years passed (not only doctrine but character as well)

We have about 10 pages of rules regarding who can teach he children. But I'd have to review the bylaws regarding adults...

  • You need to be an active participant in church ministries for about a year
  • You need to pass State and Federal background standards (Child and Young Adult ministries only)
  • You need to attend an in-house child safety class (Child and Young Adult ministries only)
  • You need to be interviewed by an elder (and in the case of Children’s Ministry, the Director of Children’s Ministry). Looking at:
    • stable Christian walk,
    • giftedness and abilities,
    • prior experience,
    • agreement with the church’s doctrinal statement,
    • a general doctrinal examination,
Rob

Interesting how each church differs on who is allowed to teach and the requirements. Yes my old church was very lenient. As long as the pastor liked and agreed with you. No elder filtering or anything required.

No elder filtering? Or is your church congregation ruled?

Whoever the nominating committee can strong arm into doing the job. I became the teacher of adult Sunday school (20-40) when I was out of town the Sunday before and Sunday of the nominating committee list.

If the pastor had agreed with them then there was elder filtering.
