Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger].

CEB
Jesus replied, “This is what God requires, that you believe in him whom God sent.”
ERV
Jesus answered, “The work God wants you to do is this: to believe in the one he sent.”
GNT
Jesus answered, “What God wants you to do is to believe in the one he sent.”
ICB
Jesus answered, “The work God wants you to do is this: to believe in the One that God sent.”
MOUNCE
Jesus answered, · · saying to them, “This is the work that God requires, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
NCV
Jesus answered, “The work God wants you to do is this: Believe the One he sent.”
NET
Jesus replied, “This is the deed God requires—to believe in the one whom he sent.”
NLT
Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
NTE
‘This is the work God wants of you,’ replied Jesus, ‘that you believe in the one he sent.’
TPT
Jesus answered, “The work you can do for God starts with believing in the One he has sent.”
WE
Jesus answered them, `The work that God asks you to do is to believe in the one whom he has sent.'

Thus many scholars translate the ambiguous phrase "work of God" to mean the work God requires of us, include Dr. Dan Wallace, NT editor of the NET.

Therefore John 6:29 should read in the NIV, "the work God requires of us."

Examples 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 26, 33, 34, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 document replacement of the inspired historical meaning with a different meaning.
Example 24 and 28 documents a translation devoid of meaning, just an array of disconnected phrases.
Example 27 clarifies the confusion produced by the Greek plural "you."
Examples 31, 32 and 43 present an unambiguous correction to the NIV translations.

When translators "add" words or phrases, "omit" words or phrases, or translate words or phrases outside of the historical-grammatical meaning unnecessarily, in order to make doctrine driven choices, they are presenting a flawed translation in my opinion. All translations have flaws, the product of fallible people, but the NIV flaws seem abundant to me.

Now let us consider Romans 3:22: (NIV)

This righteousness is given through faith in [fn] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,

The footnote [fn] says: "Or through the faithfulness of."

Notice how the verse is made redundant "through faith in Jesus" then "to all who believe" in that same Jesus. However the alternate interpretation of the genitive (pistis jesous) provides remarkable clarity, this righteousness is given through or by means of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ to all who believe.

While the NIV translates Hades as Hades, it fails to translate Gehenna as Gehenna (the NIV goes with Hell) or Tartarus as Tartarus (again going with Hell).

Thus the following verses should read Gehenna instead of Hell:
Matthew 5:22, 5:29, 5:30, 10:28, 18:9, 23:15 and 23:33;
Mark 9:43, 9:45, and 9:47
Luke 12:5;
James 3:6

And 2 Peter 2:4 should read Tartarus instead of Hell. (item # 38)

Usually the NIV translates "from the foundation of the world" as "from or since the creation of the world. However at Luke 11:50, the NIV introduces another way to alter the text, going with "since the beginning of the world. Again, the same Greek phrase has the same meaning and should be consistently translated to provide transparency and correspondence. Thus the verse should read "since the foundation of the world."

Consistency in usage of words to translate the same meaning is a consistent failure of the NIV.

In Acts 2:4 we get "other tongues" but in Acts 2:6 we get languages. Acts 2:4 should be translated as "foreign languages" to provide the same idea as Acts 2:6.

Misleading translation choices, or poor translation choices provide an opening for false teachers to present false doctrine, such as speaking in an angelic language as a gift.

Luke 6:36 be merciful, just as your Father is merciful should read be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate to be consistent with the NIV translation of mercy and compassion at Romans 9:15.

Luke 18:13, "be merciful" should read "be propitious" to be consistent with the translation choice of Romans 9:15.

Romans 12:1, "...in view of God's mercies should read "in view of God's compassions..." to be consistent with the translation choice at Romans 9:15.

Hebrews 10:28, "without mercy should read "without compassion" to be consistent with the translation choice at Romans 9:15.

Janes 5:11, "... The Lord is full of compassion and mercy" should read "The Lord is tenderhearted and full of compassion" to be consistent with the translation of compassion and mercy at Romans 9:15.

Another Greek word, "metanoia" a noun is usually translated as "repentance" by the NIV, but sadly, failed the consistency and transparency test on two occasions:

Luke 15:7 reads do not need to repent (turning the noun into a verb) rather than who needs no repentance.

Hebrews 12:17 "he could not change what he had done" should read "he could not find the occasion for repentance."

Anyone who think post #2 is the very same as some previous post is wrong. Over time the list is updated. The NIV is flawed, and many more flaws could be added because the NIV translates willy nilly.
"Willy nilly" into Japanese: ウィリーニリー :Biggrin

Thanks for your input. Post #2 had about 33 examples of NIV flaws, many related to inconsistent translation of the same word or phrase meaning, the last update had about 50 examples. Thus many NIV translation choices seem "without direction or planning," i.e. willy nilly.

Romans 8:15, (NIV) "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Using the correct meaning for yhiothesia, a more accurate translation choice would be "... the Spirit you received brought God's pledge to your promised benefits as children of God. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

Romans 8:23, (NIV) Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

Here a better translation would be "... as we wait eagerly for our promised future benefit as children of God, the redemption of our bodies.

Ephesians 1:5 (NIV)
he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—

A better translation might be "He predestined us to our promised bodily redemption as children of God, through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.

Galatians 4:5 (NIV)
to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.

Here again a better translation might be "so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the promised benefits of being children of God.

Here is how the NIV translates Galatians 2:16:
Gal 2:16
know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in [fn] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

And here is the associated footnote: Or but through the faithfulness of ? justified on the basis of the faithfulness of

In this verse we find a slew of poorly done translation efforts:

1) First, we are justified by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, who laid down His life as a ransom for all.

2) And second, even we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by Christ's faithfulness.

A far more accurate translation would read, "knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, we have put our faith in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ, and not by the works of the Law, because by the works of the Law no one will be justified."

Since the word translated as "the called" has different and unrelated meanings, when the meaning is to be transferred into Christ, a better translation than "the called" would be positionally sanctified. Here are five verses where the NIV translation would be improved:
Romans 1:6 - rather than "called to belong to" should read "positionally sanctified in."
Romans 1:7 called to be his holy people should read "positionally sanctified as saints."
Romans 8:28 called according to his purpose should read "positionally sanctified according to His purpose."
1 Corinthians 1:2 "to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people," should read "to those positionally sanctified in Christ Jesus and set apart as His holy people.
1 Corinthians 1"24 "to those who are the called" should read "to those positionally sanctified"
Jude 1:1 "To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ" should read "To those who have been positionally sanctified, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ.

Here we go again. I am forced to respond to spam.
Again, Van makes bare assertions and by that alone he attempts to foist his dictums.
I will cite 14 Bible translations (not the KJV knockoffs that Van likes to use). If a fair number use his particular phraseology then he will be awarded a point that he can cash in for redemption (not the salvific kind).
If no translation uses his terminology no point will be issued.
Many times there is hardly a difference in meaning between his particular word choices and that of the translations I may cite.

#1 No translation has his wording
#2 Van insists on Gehenna. The WEB, NABRE use Van's language
#3 No translation
#4 Van likes "My yoke is beneficial. None of the 14 uses that wording. It's usually "My yoke is easy."
#5 See # 2
#6 No translation
#7 Van opts for "moved with anger." Although the NIV has "was indignant" Van doesn't like it.
The CEB has "incensed" The LEB has "becoming angry" and the NET has "moved with indignation"
I don't know if van would approve of any of the aforementioned.
#8 See #2
#9 Van wants "lawful for priests alone." The NASB renders it "which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone." The NET and WEB both word it like the NASB for the most part.
#10 The CEB, Mounce and NLT agree with Van.
# 11 Van vouches for "praying alone." Although "praying in private" as the NIV does conveys the very same meaning. Nonetheless, quite a few translation use Van's preference : EHV, ESV, LEB, NASB, NCV, NRSV and WEB.
Van will be happy about this.
#12 Van likes "doing the work alone." (No pun intended.) No version uses his wording. However, I fail to see why "all the work by myself" would be considered to be inferior to his preference.
______________________________________________________________________________
So, numbers 5 and 8 are repetitious. There are actually ten items here. Van struck out for numbers 1,3, 6 and 12. He gets six points in this round, or 60%.
