Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could have a tax-free $350,000 dropped into his bank account if the current investigation into his disappearance from his base in Afghanistan was not desertion, and if he is deemed to have been a prisoner of war for the five years he was held by Islamic militants, Fox News has learned.

The 28-year-old soldier, for whom the U.S. traded five senior Taliban operatives held at Guantanamo Bay, was set to return to active duty Monday after spending six weeks in medical rehab at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio.

“Essentially he’ll be working a desk job,” Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters at the Pentagon Monday.

I don't mind so much, I guess, that he's being useful, to whatever extent such a useless soldier can be. But paying him $200,000 in back pay and $15,000 in POW pay?? You've got to be kidding me!!

This clown is at the very least a deserter. His own squad confirms that, but last I heard, the Army wasn't interviewing them. And he may be a traitor, which means he should have a reservation up the road from me in Ft. Leavenworth, not get paid for being a screw-up.

We have a rule: Innocent until proven otherwise. i.e. Due process.

One possible answer: the man's psychological profile may have been disqualification for combat duty--maybe even enlistment. In that event, the system messed up. Maybe the man never should have been in a line unit from the gitgo. There are probably other 4-Fs in the system.

Now what?

Administrative hold-- Board of Inquiry--do the right thing or cover-up. Sounds like there may be some serious finger pointing going on. This is not unusual for the largest bureaucratic systems in the world.

We have a government that id dedicated to obfuscation, lies and deception. They wanted Gitmo closed, so they released the five most dangerous occupants of it, and used Bergdahl as a pawn in a scheme designed to look like a "fair prisoner exchange." I've posted on here the character of the five terrorists who were the political and military heads of the Taliban, so there's no need to go into that.

I can tell you from my military background that the men who are on the front lines of any war need to know who they can trust, and they did not trust Beau Bergdahl. He was a bad actor from his first day of duty with the unit. He deserted. There are countless witnesses to that fact. Additionally, there is recorded radio traffic indicating he contacted Afghan civilians and sought to meet up with Taliban forces within three days of his desertion.

All this is established fact. Official military records provide the evidence this is all true. Yet Berghahl's squad members have not been interviewed by the military in anticipation of the assumed court-martial, and it is obvious from his freedom of movement and reassignment to desk duty that the military is under orders from their commander-in-chief to sweep his dirt under the rug and ignore the fact that he is at best a deserter and at worst a traitor.

Technically, the answers to your questions are both "No." Factually, this is a travesty of justice in which five extremely dangerous terrorists were released for a deserter/traitor for the sole purpose of Obama doing whatever he wants whenever he wants while a milquetoast Congress that has abandoned its Constitutional duties sits by idly, other than for the left side of the aisle to make excuses while actually doing nothing at all, while the right side of the aisle hems, haws, threatens yet another useless committee hearing, and also does nothing.

The Bergdahl case is prime example of the usurpation of power by this president from all venues of the federal government that would normally provide the checks and balances preventing dictatorship. We are so very close to having one right now, and no one seems to know it, or care.

My question is this, then, Curtis. What are we to think if the Army appears unwilling to take the evidence to court? There are numerous indications of his actual collaboration with the Taliban. (Note: I can't link all the articles below because the forum seems to have enacted a three-link limit per post.)

• Former Army Sgt. Evan Buetow recounted that days after Bergdahl vanished from the U.S. base, there were reports that he was in a nearby village looking for someone who spoke English, so that he could establish communications with the Taliban. Soon afterward, Buetow recalled, “IEDs started going off directly under the trucks. They were getting perfect hits every time. Their ambushes were very calculated, very methodical.”
• Fox News, on June 2 under the headline "Sources: Intelligence community investigated Bergdahl’s conduct," reported that Bergdahl “both in his final stretch of active duty in Afghanistan and then, too, during his time when he lived among the Taliban — has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. intelligence community and is the subject of ‘a major classified file.’ In conveying as much, the Defense Department source confirmed to Fox News that many within the intelligence community harbor serious outstanding concerns not only that Bergdahl may have been a deserter but that he may have been an active collaborator with the enemy.”
• Just days before he left his unit, Bergdahl wrote to his father in somewhat less than patriotic terms: “I am sorry for everything here. These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid.” He declared: “I am ashamed to be an American. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools. I am sorry for everything. The horror that is America is disgusting.”
• Fox News reported on June 3 under the headline "Bergdahl wrote of being 'ashamed' to be an American in emails" that according to “sources who had debriefed two former members of Bergdahl’s unit,” the deserter “left behind a note the night he left base in which he expressed disillusionment with the Army and being an American and suggested that he wanted to renounce his American citizenship and go find the Taliban.”
• Semi-classified documents reveal collaboration with the enemy on Bergdahl's part. According to one of these documents, dated August 23, 2012, “conditions for Bergdahl have greatly relaxed since the time of the escape. Bergdahl has converted to Islam and now describes himself as a mujahid. Bergdahl enjoys a modicum of freedom, and engages in target practice with the local mujahedeen, firing AK47s. Bergdahl is even allowed to carry a loaded gun on occasion. Bergdahl plays soccer with his guards and bounds around the pitch like a mad man. He appears to be well and happy, and has a noticeable habit of laughing frequently and saying ‘Salaam’ repeatedly.”

These are offenses punishable by life imprisonment, or even death. Yet the military treats him as just another soldier and has returned him to duty -- albeit with two "buddies" with him at all times to "help him make the adjustment" back to Army life. It is obvious just from that simple action that the Army does not trust Bergdahl but has no choice in its treatment of him.

I am not advocating, by any means, a "guilty until proven innocent" methodology. But if Charles Manson had never been brought to trial and was allowed to return to the world with two "buddies" who were assigned to "help him readjust" what would we think? This is no different. If the statements above are true, Bergdahl is as much a psychopathic killer as is Manson. The American people deserve to hear the truth and see the results of whatever justice is determined.
