And who bailed you out in your War of Independence? Oh yes, those cheese-eating surrender monkeys...

Matt, you need to provide the whine with that cheese. Your also forgetting that other Europeans lent assistance in trouncing the British.....for example that very excellent country Poland provided us General Kosciusko and the hearty Kielbasa and now that we mention it, laughter & joy in the Polish Jokes.....which reminds me...

Q: Why wasn't Christ born in Poland?

A: Because they couldn't find three wise-men and a virgin.

I can get away with that as I'm part Polish (hope):tonofbricks:

Heh heh!

To return to a more serious note, re equality of opportunity, I think it's worth listening to the eulogy given by the comedian Billy Connolly at the funeral of Scottish trade union leader Billy Reid yesterday; in the first minute or so he talks about that very subject.

[ETA - it's just occurred to me that you might have to be resident in the UK to access the eulogy so the pertinent section of Connolly's speech is reproduced below:

"I remember him saying that if you look at these housing estates and high-rise flats - look at all the windows.
"Behind every one of these windows is somebody who might be a horse-jumping champion, a formula one racing champion, a yachtsman of great degree, but he'll never know because he'll never step on a yacht or formula one car - he'll never get the chance."

Oh fine! Thanks for reminding me that my mother-in - law / expats from Scotland will be visiting next week. You havent addressed the Cadbury UK made Chocolates & Toffees. And I will have to listen to words like "Wee & Bloody". I will have to get her some liqueur filled Italian or "French" chocolates to shut her up.

Cadburys have been taken over by Kraft so any problems are the fault of the Americans from now on...same as everything else that goes wrong in the world. My business isn't doing so well and it's raining today, so I fancy a burning session of Old Glory.

Again that is related to the equalness of of wealth. It could just as easily be said behind every one of those windows is another Paris Hilton, a Tom Cruise, a Anna Nicole Smith. Wealth doesn't solve all issues. Nor is equal opportunity equal to equality of wealth. Having no restrictions on what you chose to do with what ever you have is true liberty.

Then it comes down to Will, Determination, Spirit. The same wind that blows a ship on the rocks could blow it to safe harbor. It's not the wind, it's the set of the sail. Anyone who denies this is a weakling who wishes to blame others for his life.

If you were a Dem in this country you could just tack onto the list things Bush is reponsible for. I am surprise that someone has not yet blamed him for the cause of man falling into sin.

BTW: I love Bush, one of those pesky Republicans.

Lager is verily an abomination unto the Lord which causeth a foul stench in His nostrils; 'tis the veritable willy-water of the Devil and he who doth sup it doth sup with Beelzebub himself. The process of continuous fermentation, by which it is claimed by those in the Romish areas of Europe that all the sugar changeth completely into alcohol, cannot be proved from Holy Writ and is repugnant thereto, although the Real Ale in the Elements is of course to be encouraged in these parts.

So I take it you're more of a pils guy.

No No NO! That's even worse. Real Ale only for me. Being an Anglican, I also like GIN. Plus single malt Scotch and red wine.

Very Anglo-Scandinavian. I'm descended from Vikings so used to brew my own from honey. Very dangerous.
