Is drinking alcohol in moderation or casually a sin?

If you don't adopt the myth surrounding tobacco use in general, is dipping or smoking a sin?

I couldn't prove from the Bible that any of these is sin.
I don't really drink, not because I believe it to be wrong but I have never tasted an alcoholic beverage that I really liked.

Drunkenness is another matter. That is spoken of in scripture.

As for tobacco, well that is totally a man made sin.
Every argument against tobacco could be made against Coke, Cake, Ice cream and McDonalds.
If something being unhealthy makes it a sin then every-time you eat a candy bar, you are in sin.

Of course gluttony IS a sin and is just as bad as drunkenness.

They are only sins if they control you. Smoking the occasional cigar, having a beer on occasion are not sinful practices in themselves.

SGW,

Get out a Greek dictionary or concordance and do a search for the word 'sober'. You may be surprised that in 4 instances of the word, it does indeed mean 'abstain from wine'. That should tell one that drinking in moderation is forbidden according to the New Testament.

As to smoking or dipping, they cause cancer. They are slow poison. Are we not told in the Word of God that we are to be faithful stewards of what God has given us? We are to glorify God in our bodies according to Paul's writing to the Church of Corinth... does smoking and dipping that which causes cancer bringing glory to God?

Since the Word of God says to 'abstain', then an occasional beer is sin whether one wants to believe it to be or not.

I swear, HBSMN must have software that alerts him to any alcohol related threads :)

I've been around the block with you on this already. I don't wish to do it again. :wavey:

1Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Can the tobacco or alcohol or coke or junk food be taken into your body (which is the temple of the Holy Ghost) for the glory of God. Can you tell the lost drug addict that God can deliver him from drug addiction while you are hooked on caffeine, tobacco, or alcohol. Even if you say that it is done in moderation then isn't that a waste of the money that God has blessed you with? We are to present our bodies a living sacrifice unto God and sometimes being a living sacrifice actually means sacrificing some of the fleshly desires that we have.

These thread are frustrating enough to drive a man to drinking.....hold on a minute.....okay, I had to light my cigar.

I'm just joking...I only smoke cigars on the weekends. Anyways....I'm becoming fond of pipes. Is anyone here a pipe fan? Just curious on suggestions of what type, like a briar or a meershum.

Not only is drinking fermented wine a sin but we are not even supposed to look at it...

"Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright." - Proverbs 23:31

Tobacco products are unhealthy addictions and if our bodies are temples of God, it would seem improper to submit our temples to such devices.

"Have you not reason then to be ashamed and to forbear this filthy novelty, so basely grounded, so foolishly received and so grossly mistaken in the right use thereof. In your abuse thereof sinning against God harming yourselves both in person and goods, and raking also thereby the marks and notes of vanity upon you by the custom thereof making yourselves to be wondered at by all foreign civil nations and by all strangers that come among you to be scorned and held in contemp; a custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs, and in the black stinking fume thereof nearest resembling the horrible stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomless." - King James VI & I, Counterblast to Tobacco

I heard a funny story about Spurgeon. Apparently he was smoking a cigar as a sermon was being preached and was called out for it. He replied that he'll quit smoking cigars if he sees himself smoking in excess. They asked him how much smoking is considered too much, and he replied when he is smoking two at a time.

I expect that the "new wine" argument will come up, for those that think the wedding feast guests were estatic over the "grape juice" that Christ made for them.

Jesus drank sour wine on the cross. He made wine for guests. Drinking for me, would be a sin, as I am an alchoholic & a drug addict, but there is no sin at enjoying a beer after work. Unless your doing so causes a brother to stumble, in his walk with Christ.

What should we discern that Proverbs 23:31 is talking about then? What is the wine we are not supposed to look at?

I cannot find where the guests were ecstatic over the wine that Jesus created, only that the governor stated that the good was kept 'until now'. No one else was said to have commented on the wine at the feast, so to say the guests were ecstatic is mere speculation.

Jesus did not drink wine on the cross, Curtis. Go back and read... nevermind, I will post it.

They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

Since the Word of God says Jesus would not drink, I believe that He did not drink.

Since the Greek for 'sober' says 'abstain from wine,' we are to abstain from wine. That does not mean enjoy an occasional drink after work.

My study bible translates "vinegar" as soured wine.

And yes, I can assume that the guests were as happy as the governor, but that's not the point. The point is, Jesus made wine, not grape juice.

And this will never be settled, so I'm gonna put my opinion out here, and let everyone else think they have a better place in heaven than I do.
