What does the Bible say about gambling? Is gambling a sin?

No, I would not call anything that goes on in the business world gambling. Investing is taking a calculated risk and in that sense you could compare it to gambling but that does not mean it is the same thing. In any "game of chance" you are putting your money down and "win" when the other guy looses. In investing, the goal is for everyone to win. You put your money down and the company does well, people buy their products or services and everyone benefits. Sure, sometimes you lose but that is not an intrinsic necessary part of it. Gambling is unwise and poor stewardship. Investing can be quite wise. Jesus scolded (in parable) a guy for NOT investing money. He did not scold him for not gambling.Originally posted by AresMan:
Well said.
Now, would you say there are quite a few who "gamble" at the NYSE?
Just make sure you tithe it!!! Just kidding, just kidding!!Originally posted by west:
I would feel funny standing up at church and say "I just want to thank the Lord for winning a $1000.00 on the football game Sunday afternoon .
In order to be consistent, you would then have to denounce contests and give-aways. No more playing "monopoly" at McDonald's.Originally posted by gb93433:
Gambling is getting paid for something for which you did not labor.
That would be rare. Coming from a Catholic background, I don't know a single catholic who believed every word the Catholic church taught them. I don't know a single Baptist that believes every word their Baptist fellowship teaches them.Originally posted by TexasSky:
I know a lot of people who were once upon a time, very devout Catholics. Meaning, they believed every word that the Catholic church taught them.
