Is there ever a time to lie?

Is lying ever justified?

Do you believe that it is ever ok for a Christian to lie and it will not be sin? Like in the case of saving a life?

Like would you lie to save a child from a potential killer?

This scripture is being discussed in the theology section under "Introducing Christian Doctrine...."

2Ch 18:19-22 NIV
(19)
And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?'
"One suggested this, and another that.
(20) Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.'
" 'By what means?' the LORD asked.
(21) " 'I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said.
" 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.'
(22) "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."

God seems to not only endorse lying here, but commands it.

Do you think Paul lied to protect anyone from a potential killer?

Would Jesus lie? Are we not to have the mind of Christ?

What do you do with Rahab?

What do you do with God using a lying Spirit in 1 Kings 22?

Revelations 21:8 (KJV)
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

What do you do with 'all liars' shall have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone?
Do you believe that God cannot save a liar?

BTW, Rahab was not a liar as such. Telling your enemy a falsehood to protect life does not make one a liar.

yes, without even a second thought.

Rahab lied to save lives.

Corrie ten Boom

Dietrich Bonhoffer

Scores of other Dutch and German Reformed Believers who lied "straight in the face" of NAZI swine to save the lives of Jews, Gypsies, Poles, and Russians

Put in the same situation---me hiding YOU from the Gestapo---buddy---I'd point the numbskulls in the opposite direction----my prison sentence for your life spared---I wouldn't think twice about it, either

There's a huge difference between continually lying and not repenting of a lie.

No one said anything about continually lying.

The question was is there ever a time to lie? Would you lie to save the life of a child, etc?

I stand by my answer, yes I would without a second thought.

That's not lying. Lying is bearing false witness against thy neighbor. Misleading God's enemies to frustrate their diabolical plans is demanded by the command to love thy neighbor as thyself.

Consider the Midwives in Egypt (Ex. 1:17-22) and the aforementioned Rahab the harlot.

God uses many things for His glory. We are not to question God or anything He does.

Very good point!

Lying can be OK even when not saving a life. If my son shows me something he drew and asks if it looks good, of course I'm going to say yes even if it doesn't.

Same with when my wife asks if she looks fat in a certain outfit. What man in their right mind would ALWAYS tell the truth :)

Johnathan and David in the field is a lying circumstance. As was already pointed out, Rahab is another. It can even be said that Jesus pretending to go further while walking on the road with the two men after His resurrection could be considered lying.
