Lying can be OK even when not saving a life. If my son shows me something he drew and asks if it looks good, of course I'm going to say yes even if it doesn't.

Your child's art is good for his age. You can't expect Picasso from a child.

Same with when my wife asks if she looks fat in a certain outfit. What man in their right mind would ALWAYS tell the truth :)

Tell her it's not the outfits fault. :saint:

Women need to stop asking that question.

It's always the woman's fault...

As it has been said before in this thread... Look at Rahab!!!

I couldn't resist.

Yes, I would lie to save the life of a child or to save someone innocent from getting killed. I hope I never have to face that kind of situation, though. It's kind of like asking if it's okay to do something wrong in order to accomplish something right, and that is a very dangerous slippery slope.

I remember an interesting story about a family who hid their sons under the floor under the dining room table when the Nazi's came. When they questioned the women, the daughter could not bring herself to lie and she admitted that the men were all hiding under the table. God still protected the family. The Nazis lifted the tablecloth and found nothing--it never dawned on them to look for a trap door under the table. They thought the girl had played a joke on them and they left.

Then there comes the question of always telling the truth. I have seen many times the truth used to hurt, degrade, belittle, tear down a person. Is keeping ones big mouth shut a lie? Speak up Pharisees.

I do not lie and have stated it several times on here and have received sarcasm for it.

Have you not ever learned to keep your mouth shut???

Jesus said all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire, was Jesus lying???

Either you can lie and it does not matter, and Jesus was lying, or you cannot lie. One or the other!!!

Hard to believe that only 2 people voted you can not lie, and I am one of them.

I wonder how many "Pastors" on here voted it was ok to lie??

BBob,
Good thing Jesus took to the cross the sins of the world.

What does this mean, because you accepted Jesus you now have a license to sin??? Or have I misunderstood you?

Are you saying now that you have Christ that a lie is not a lie?? I hope I did misunderstand you.

Rom 6:1¶What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Rom 6:2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

BBob,
You misunderstood. I don't lie.But I realize one sin is no worse than any other. Therefore, whether it is lying or any number of sins that we do on a daily basis, we are are in serious trouble without Jesus, and He is able to forgive every one of them. Do you sin Bob? If you do you are in the same shape as everyone on this board, whether you lie or not.

Not true, there is a sin and there is a sin unto death. If you are asking me if I commit adultery, lie, steal, worship idols, etc, the answer is NO!

BBob,
Sin unto death? I know the verse but are you saying it is a hellbound sin that Jesus won't forgive? Could it be a sin unto death in THIS world? If you have just one unforgiven sin you can't see Heaven. I was just making a point that Jesus will forgive all sins. Is there a sin that Jesus didn't die for?He WILL forgive the liar the same as He will forgive a thief or a whoremonger. Now idol worship can be a very broad term. That would deserve a whole thread of its own.

I am saying that God's children do not commit such sins for they are kept by the Grace of God, and are indwelt with the Holy Ghost and the Spirit of the Lord, which acccording to scripture will keep them, spirit, soul and body blameless until the end. Also, if we do any wrong we are chastened of the Lord that we be not condemned with the world.

If they were to commit adultery, they would have to drag the Spirit of God along with them and the Holy Ghost and I do not believe that can happen.

1Jo 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

1Jo 5:18 ¶ We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

1Pe 1:5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

BBob,

Is lying to save a life a sin?

I was just talking to someone the other day about this very thread subject. Isn't it amazing how God works? We were talking about how evil this world has gotten and would either of us lie to save one, or more, of our family members. He even stated that if some people told him if he told them he believed in God, they would kill each of his family members one at a time, and he said he would. Mind you, this scenario involved him being tied up, and his family members tied up as well, and he would be forced to see them killed. I love my family with all my heart, and if I was ever put in this situation, it would be very hard for me to lie. Jesus said if you deny me before this sinful and adulterous generation, He would be ashamed to confess me before His Father and His holy angels. I know all of this is a "hypothetical" situation, but my mom and dad would not want me to deny God to save them, nor would I want them to do it for me, either. But, none of us knows how we would really react if we were put on this situation. I see that according to the NT scriptures, lying is wrong. I am not saying you can't be forgiven of it, but it is wrong. If I heard one of my brothers/sisters in CHRIST telling a lie, I would lose all confidence in them.

The OT refrences people are using are under a whole different covenant(Mosacical(SP?). Annanias and Sapphira died immediately after they lied to the Holy Ghost. I just don't see where it's okay for a CHRISTian to lie under any circumstance. But of course, it's my humble opinion.

I am not sure that a Christian will be able to commit adultery.
Not because a Christian is above that but I am not sure that God will allow it.

it something I should look into more

I know what your saying. We try not to sin. But we aren't sin-free. I hope your not saying you are sin-free. The point I was trying to make is all are in the same boat as the liar. Sounds like you are saying you have sinless perfection on this side of eternity. If you don't, you are in no better shape than the liar.

A good testimony Convicted1 and it does give one reason to pause, then you think of all the Christians who by just confessing they were Christians, had their heads cut off. I would hope that I would be able to stand under such conditions.

Luk 17:33Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Bro JerryL,

I don't believe that Jesus will forgive every sin. The one sin He won't forgive is blaspheming(sp?) the Holy Ghost. I think this is the sin unto death. I don't believe the "sin unto death" refers to the natural death that we already have to face...because we all are going to die someday. Could this be what caused Annanias and Sapphira to die when they lied to the Holy Ghost? Any thoughts on this?

BBob,
I agree, Bob.

It is never ok to bear false witness against thy neighbor, nor is it ever ok to conspire to bait, deceive, or otherwise take advantage of the innocent, nor to save your own skin. (Remember, if we deny Christ before men, He shall deny us before His Father.)

But you can't ignore the exceptions in Scripture. (They're not really exceptions, they're just exceptions from a fleshly point of view.) I don't see that you have answered the questions concerning Rahab or the midwives in Egypt. (The passage from 1 Kings is not an example of an exception. God sent a lying spirit as judgment upon their lack of faithfulness, just as he continues to send strong delusion to those who refuse to believe the truth as judgment upon their infidelity, 2 Thess. 2:11) Did God not deal well with the midwives and give them their own houses for the act of saving innocent lives? Is Rahab not mentioned twice in the NT for her act of faith?

Needless to say, the "exceptions" are much more narrow than I think most in this thread are willing to admit, but they are there.

Working in law enforcement, I've come across this a few times. I've told a few people that they wouldn't go to jail if they gave themselves up. I was trying to prevent injury to them, fellow officers, or people in the house with them. I've also told suicidal people that we wouldn't come to their house when I was really trying to get an address so we can get him some help. I've felt at peace about those. I do believe the importance of saving lives takes precedent.
