I have seen several television shows where the host or musical group have dedicated the show or song to Trayvon Martin...And while that is truly a nice gesture, especially for his family, I can't help but wonder if silence on this issue would be more appropriate for the time being; considering this was a criminal act by more than likely both individuasl [as both had some, or equal responsibility for what took place]?

After all, what if a television show or their music guest dedicated the song or show to George Zimmerman? Would that be right?

I'm certainly not trying to create a controversy, and I know of one member who will tear me to pieces for this, but I had to ask, and I'd appreciate your honest responses!

Paul,
I guess I look at it this way. We live in a nation where freedom of speech exists. We also live in a nation of "off" buttons, which I would do in this case. It works wonders on Rush Limbaugh.

Another point to consider...

The wise king Solomon said in Ecclesiastes that "the dead know not any thing"

So, why sing a song for a person who can't even hear it? Why dedicate a show to someone who can't even watch it?

Doesn't the Word of God prove such actions are futile?

Because there are certain elements of the hateful in this country that would like nothing better than to see a race war started over this tragedy.

Proverbs 4:16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

Isn't paying homage to a dead person considered idolatry?

You have a great point, thanks for making it known!

Ooops, is that kind of thing idolatry/futility as well when it's found on the dedication page of one's self-published book?

So, we sould all take up, and break, up all the family tomb stones? And the Lincoln and Washington memorials?
If it were YOURE son or daughter, would you feel the same?

So I guess i was being idolatrous when I talked about my father at his funeral service? :BangHead: They aren't worshipping him.

This is not idolatry, it is freedom of speech but would make me turn the channel.

Not sure you can make a point from Ecclesiastes and the out of fellowship, adulterous Solomon.

Apparently dead people do know some things. The rich man in hell knew what was going on (Luke 16:23). The martyred believers in Revelation asked God how long He was going to allow the persecution to go on. (Rev 6:10)

My feelings wouldn't matter. God's Word is what matters.

Right

So... since we know that paying homage to a dead person is idolatry, do you and your family refuse have any stone or or something like it where your relatives lay?

A simple yes or no will be fine.

Isn't paying homage to a dead person considered idolatry?

Then we got a lot of conservatives who are idolizing Ronald Reagan. Just listen to Sean and Rush for an example.

Better not hear anything from any of you about flying any flags on Memorial Day.

Don't say anything about those dead Veterans and better not be no honoring taking place on Armistice Day either.

Does this mean we can knock down the Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and MLK Jr. monuments?

Can we tear down the libraries of the dead Presidents?

What about street names? Hospitals? and YIKES! The schools! All these schols named in honor of dead people.

Baltimore, MD? Change your name.
Columbus, OH? Ungh ungh.
Poor Pennsylvania. all this time and now a name change is needed.
Georgia? Named after a King!
Jefferson City, Missouri get off the map.
Bye bye New York City.
What state will Olympia now be the capital of?
And the nation's capital. What a quandary!

Yes it's easy to make clear that folks make certain comments out of prejudice and politics.

All these things in the country, never before mentioned. But NOW, someone wants to dedicate a show to Trayvon Martin's memory and we want to know if paying homage to a dead person is idolatry?

....sitting in a supped up Camaro SS, with the trans in neutral, while you press the pedal to the medal.

Lots of noise; smoke; smog; and a waste of gas [energy]! What a shame. Same old rhetoric.

saying great things about Reagan, or even Obama, for that matter, AFTER THE FACT of their being presidents, I can understand.
heck, even Maozedung is sometimes eulogized.
speaking well of veterans I can understand, and certainly approve of.
saying nice stuff about our dearly departed is certainly more appropriate than dwelling on their negatives.
I sure understand it if the parents, siblings, and friends of Trayvon Martin call him a nice young man.
Even Pretty Boy Floyd's mother called him a nice, good Christian man if my memory serves me right about a bio I read somewhere.
But I really don't understand a radio, tv, or talk show host dedicating his or her show to the memory of a young man whom he knows nothing about other than what he read in others' articles (which for the most part was slanted to show that the black man is still a target of opportunistic bigotry in 21st century America).
I mean, what do they really care ?
Rihanna "grieves"for a brudda, and then studs her teeth with diamonds ?
I mean, come on.
Jamie Foxx wears a t-shirt in memory of Trayvon Martin, after he stars in a movie he enjoys because he's killing all them white folks ?
yeah, right.
The Crips and the Bloods riot in LA because Zimmerman was acquitted, so now they smash all those windows and STEAL AND LOOT ???
oh, my.
Yeah, Trayvon Martin is a victim alright.
Of the very people who say they are infuriated at the acquittal of Zimmerman.
So they all ride on the anger and make more money and gain more fans.
Gimme a break.

Do we have to understand why someone chooses to honor another? Why on earth are so many bothered by folks choosing to honor the boy's memory?
He wasn't a superstar. But he was somebody's child.

Perhaps they want to acknowledge that though he may not be important to the world like an Elvis or a Ronald Reagan, his life mattered to the ones who loved him. Perhaps they sympathize with a lost that could very well have been their's or a family member's own.

Why are CHRISTIANS so bothered by this?
