Would this be an ok place to discuss this? Dr. Mcgee has tremendously blessed me with his ministry. He seems to have been presbyterian, but of all I've heard from his mouth he seems to be sure enough baptist. What do you all think? My favorite sermon of his is "portrait of Christ". It's in 3 parts and here is a link to the first. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Always loved to hear him.
IMHO, he had a terrible radio voice, but after listening to him for 5 minutes or less, the message totally over-rode my objection to his voice.
Love his bible commentary as well! Got it on computer and bookshelf.

I used to listen to him a lot myself. Great preacher.

I was surprised when I saw he was Presbyterian, because I know for a fact he was not a Calvinist, I have heard him preach against it. He believed in free will all the way.

How does God choose and still allow free will?

But the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. If I say, 'This one shall go with you,' he shall go; but if I say, 'This one shall not go with you,' he shall not go." So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink." Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. Judges 7:4-6

J. Vernon McGee called this, “one of the finest lessons concerning divine election and man's free will.” McGee went further on to say, “This is the way they work together. God said to Gideon, "I am going to choose the men that I want to go with you, but the way I will do it is to let them make the choice. Bring them down to the water, and the ones who lap water like a dog, just going through and throwing it into their mouths, are the ones I have chosen. You can put aside those men who get down on all fours and take their time drinking. I don't want them." 3

If you really want to understand the book of Revelation, listen to J. Vernon McGee online, he does an outstanding job.

Don't always agree with everything. Get frustrated sometimes, but LOVE him and his preaching.

I don't always agree with everything that's on his radio broadcast either, but I do love his expository messages.

As far as I know, his "Through the Bible" program is the only one that goes through every book in the Bible.

My only complaint is that the only time his broadcast airs in my area is at 6:00 a.m., which is kinda too early for yours truly to comprehend much of what he preaches.

You're right. And I rarely say that sort of thing to you!

McGee was a a Presbyterian in name only. He apparently went against his vows. A Presbyterian minister is supposed to adhere to the Westminster Standards in order to be licensed to preach. He opposed them regularly. Billy Sunday and J. Wilbur Chapman among others, also disregarded their vows.

While teaching election though, he did state did hold to calvinistic views, but also held that you could become one of the Elect if you responding to God right now...

Heard him state in His thru the Bible program, noe in isaiah, that while he held to calvinist view of the doctrine of election, also held that whosoever wills to come to jesus can come!

Andrew Fuller Reincarnate......and very dangerous.:BangHead:

Wow! I'm not a Calvinist and I don't believe that. God, through the Holy Spirit, must draw and call us to truth, then empower us to faith. We have almost nothing -- but note, I said "almost" -- nothing to do with it, and even what we have to do with it is because God opens our hearts and minds to believe. No, McGee wasn't a Calvinist, if that's what he believed.
