MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — American Sniper is tops at the box office but don’t expect to see former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura lining up at a theater for it.

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, won $1.8 million in a defamation lawsuit last year against the estate of the late Chris Kyle, the SEAL protagonist of the movie, which has sparked debate over whether snipers should be considered heroes. Ventura said Wednesday he won’t see the film partly because Kyle is no hero to him.

"A hero must be honorable, must have honor. And you can’t have honor if you’re a liar. There is no honor in lying," Ventura told The Associated Press from his winter home in Baja California, Mexico. He also noted that the movie isn’t playing there.

There are deeds done in a war that are heroic and many go unrecognized or unreported. Medics do many heroic deeds and receive little or no recognition for those deeds by the higher ups.

While a sniper may do "good things" from his army's point of view I do not see his deeds as heroic.

I cannot remember the title of the book, but there is an excellent read about a Russian and a German sniper who day after day try to outfox each other. I'll not tell you which came out alive.

Sounds like Enemy at the Gates: The Battle of Stalingrad upon which the movie Enemy at the Gates was based.

Some people will tell you yes if it gets the desired conclusion.

Such as Machiavelli. In his case it was the results that mattered. Jonathan Gruber is a modern day advocate of Machiavelli's "noble lie". I suppose Barrack Obama could be put into that category as well be has repeatedly demonstrated that he has no honor.

Kyle was awarded two Silver Star Medals, five Bronze Star Medals, one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Jesse Ventura was awarded...let's see...none?

Wonder what it takes to be considered a hero?

Awarding medals does not mean the action was heroic nor does it mean it was not heroic. It is an award from higher ups who approved the action.

Interesting viewpoint. Clearly the one of someone that doesn't have a clue what the criteria for the awarding of military decorations might be.

Maybe now we should strip Audie Murphy and Chesty Puller of all their medals.

As I recall, Jessie "The Body" Ventura is going to be making money off the movie since sued the estate of this American Sniper fellow. I've never been very impressed with Ventura.

Comments that snipers are cowards or use an illegitimate form of combat are foolish. It is part of warfare. Ironically, most people making negative comments about snipers (or other military roles) have usually never served but seem happy to enjoy the benefits of the sacrifices of those who have.

"And you can’t have honor if you’re a liar. There is no honor in lying" is a kind of ironic thing to say, given that he's been lying about being a Navy SEAL for the last forty years.

Disagree with you about Audie Murphy. His actions were very heroic, putting himself in great danger to save others. Not the same as a sniper hiding and shooting long range.

You don't have a clue whether you disagree or not. You have no idea what Kyle recieved his decorations for.
