I thought it was pretty neat that Kerry had someone film him as he strutted around in a helmet and with a rifle. I thought he was boat commander, so what was up with that? And how about when Kerry through his medals over the fence at the Pentagon during his protesting days? Then, when he became a bigwig in DC, his medals suddenly appear on the wall of his DC office. When asked about it, he said the medals he through over the fence at the Pentagon were someone else's. Yeah, right.
What about GW Bush acting like a real pilot on an aircraft carrier when in reality he dodged going to Nam through his father's influence and money? He somehow (?) jumped ahead of a waiting list of 100 men to get in the Air National Guard.

I hear that a lot, but no one has ever produced a shred of credible evidence that it is true. I don't expect you to do so either.

You can say anything if you don't have to prove it, and you frequently do.

Here is the actual quote of Trump: “He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

I do agree that being a POW does NOT a hero make.
But I would agree that Trump could have been a bit more tactful in what he said.

Trump also continued his attacks on the Arizona senator, saying, “I think John McCain’s done very little for the veterans. I’m very disappointed in John McCain.”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz spoke at length to reporters about McCain’s heroism between signing books and appearing on-stage at the summit, but he, too, declined to condemn the comments when asked about them.

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson, whose appearance followed Trump’s at the summit, declined to comment on Trump’s remarks after leaving the stage. He also would not say when asked whether or not McCain was a war hero. “It depends on your definition of a war hero,” he said.

Oh, by the way for those who said that Trump dodge the draft - would you also say that Ben Carson dodge the draft?
How about Gov Scott Walker, Gov Rick Perry. Why weren't there draft status talked about.
And while we are at it - why didnt people complained that Obama never chose to serve in the military?

Trump was given a deferment - that is much different than dodging the draft.
If you dodge, you ended up in jail or in Canada.

I agree he said it poorly, and probably should have just kept his opinion to himself.

That being said, i have observed that it's a bad idea to try to parlay "war hero" status into being elected president. Ask John Kerry, the traitor, and John McCain, the POW.

Personally I don't look at McCain so much as a war hero as a survivor of a difficult imprisonment. His conduct toward veterans affairs as a politician has been atrocious. In particular the way he treated those still looking for their loved ones still in Vietnam, alive or dead, was brutal and uncaring. He even personally attacked some of them publicly at hearings.

I wouldn't willingly vote for him for dogcatcher. Sound familiar? And I won't miss him when he's gone from DC.

John McCain has shown us a few things consistently during his career as a politician...he's all about John McCain, loves the limelight, and relishes his role as "maverick", to the detriment of us all.

I love our soldiers. Support them every way I can. You couldn't pay be enough to sit during the Anthem. But I can't stand it when veterans tout their service for self gain, especially political gain. I've heard most soldiers abhor this as well. Can't regard them enough. I put domestic police and emergency responders in the same category, even more so, considering the number of years they serve, and the crap they get from the left.

This is the best summary I've found and it comes from the washington Post.

At Height of Vietnam Bush Picks Guard
Washingtonpost.com: At Height of Vietnam, Bush Picks Guard

It was May 27, 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. Bush was 12 days away from losing his student deferment from the draft at a time when Americans were dying in combat at the rate of 350 a week. The unit Bush wanted to join offered him the chance to fulfill his military commitment at a base in Texas. It was seen as an escape route from Vietnam by many men his age, and usually had a long waiting list.

Bush had scored only 25 percent on a "pilot aptitude" test, the lowest acceptable grade. But his father was then a congressman from Houston, and the commanders of the Texas Guard clearly had an appreciation of politics.

Staudt and other Guard commanders insist no favoritism was shown to him. But others active in Texas politics in the 1960s say the Texas National Guard was open to string-pulling by the well-connected, and there are charges that the then-speaker of the Texas legislature helped George W. gain admittance.

In addition to Bush and Bentsen, many socially or politically prominent young men were admitted to the Air Guard, according to former officials; they included the son of then-Sen. John Tower and at least seven members of the Dallas Cowboys.

I still wonder why Obama saw fit not to serve his country by joining the military.

And there's the problem with politics today. People chose teams and ignore what is true.

Trump supporters refuse to acknowledge his grave faults. Clinton supporters refuse to acknowledge both his and her grave faults. Obama supporter refuse to acknowledge his faults. Bush supporters refuse to acknowledge either of their faults. And on and on and on.

If you can't acknowledge the faults of "your" candidate, you have no credibility with me. To complain about one without holding others to the same standard is the height of hypocrisy.

Trump's biggest fault is, he's too nice. He's gotta big heart, and sometimes it's gets in the way.

Hillary's biggest fault is she's a chronic law breaker.

Obama's biggest fault is, he was totally incompetent, and destroy the US labor force.

Bush's biggest fault is, he's a globalist.

There!

I see. So people right next to the situation who would know best say no favoritism was shown, but politicians in the state of Texas knew better.

Yeah, that sounds plausible.

He seems more likeable but I'll never call him a decent president. he was actually the front man. Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Wolfowitz crowd (Neo-Cons) ran the show. Like some others here I believe in the deep state. I put the CIA and these members of the GW Bush administration in the category of likely suspects.

Yeah, that sounds plausible.

The National Guard commanders are not going to admit favoritism unless perhaps under oath.

What is a front man? The only thing Bush did that was positive was appoint 2 pro-life judges. Are you pro-life? I'm guessing you want to keep abortion like Obama did.

Even 20, 30, 40 years later? And you know this...how?

Sent from my Motorola Droid Turbo.
What would they say today if asked the same question? Yes, we moved GHW Bush's son above an existing waiting list for political reasons? And we do the same thing for wealthy people? My judgment is they would not that unless under oath. If your judgment is they would offer that information we disagree. Is that the case?

By front man I mean that the real power in Bush's Presidency was exercised by VP Cheney. When the news about the 9/11 attacks broke, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice and others were immediately rushed into an underground bunker. But for a reason I've never understood the Secret Service agents with Bush just left him in a known place where he could have easily been taken out. Cheney called the shots about whether to shoot down the plane headed toward Washington, not Bush.

I've answered the question about abortion at least 5 times. I am pro-life n the broader Biblical sense (sanctity of life). Life is sacred before birth. But it is also sacred after birth. Hundreds of thousands have been killed in the unnecessary wars we started in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Large numbers of people die due to lack of food, water or preventable disease. We kill people with capital punishment, many times executing innocent people. Are you pro-life in this sense or only in the narrow definition (abortion)?
