The Guard was viewed at the time as probably a way to avoid going to fight in Vietnam. You're correct in saying that sometimes the Guardsmen were ordered to Nam but that didn't happen very often. I have two friends that joined the Air National Guard for exactly this reason.

I don't want to discredit it out down anyone who got a purple heart. But I will point out that it's not too hard to get one. A buddy of mine got one when a grenade was launched into our compound. I was closer to the detonation than he was, but he got nicked by shrapnel.

When I say nicked, I mean that literally they put a band-aid on it. That's it. Yet since he bled, he got a people heart.

I feel the need to interject here that I am not upset that he did. I helped him get it with a sworn statement.

Also, it's not too uncommon for someone to write their own award. As long as they are doing it under orders of their Superior, I have no issue with it. (Except the fact that the Superior is shirking)
