Florida Student Who Questioned John Kerry To Be In Court

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A University of Florida student was Tasered and arrested after trying to ask U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., about the 2004 election and other subjects during a campus forum.

Videos of the incident posted on several Web sites show officers pulling Andrew Meyer, 21, away from the microphone after he asks Kerry about impeaching President George W. Bush and whether he and Bush were both members of the secret society Skull and Bones at Yale University.

"He apparently asked several questions -- he went on for quite awhile -- then he was asked to stop," university spokesman Steve Orlando said. "He had used his allotted time. His microphone was cut off, then he became upset."

CNN has been playing video of this incident all morning. I can't stop laughing.

Okay, so maybe I'm seeing this from the wrong point of view, but, I still can't stop laughing.

Serious stuff first: Kerry offered to answer the young man's questions in order to settle the incident.

The young man in question was well warned by the those officiating the event, before security was called in. They turned off his microphone when the young man's time was up and past.

The young man refused to leave. Then he pretended he didn't know why he was being escorted out and began struggling with the security officer. When more officers stepped up to help the first, the young man still refused to yeild, instead insisting that he get his own way. The young man then continued to struggle, shout, make a specticle of himself and disturb the event. Eventually he managed to escalate things to the point to where there were four or five officers trying to control him enough to get him out of the venue. At this point, the young man continued to struggle and shout. The officers must have warned him, cause you can hear him shout "Don't taz me!" But he still didn't yeild! What other choice did the officers have?

Why am I laughing you ask? Well, I've heard this video played through about a half dozen times now and each time it reminds me of when one of my children did something I told them not to do, defiantly, and when I began to apply correction, they started yelling, not because they were sorry, but because they didn't want what they knew they had coming! And that is exactly how this kid sounds. Like a 5 year old throwing a temper tantrum and thinking it abuse that mom or dad is putting an end to it.

Somehow, I'm just not feeling real sorry for him. Perhaps, if his own mom or dad, had applied the proper correction to his ideas of grandiosity when he was a child, he would've known when to give way. Bzzzzt!

I saw the tape, and I failed to see his mic turned off, and I didn't see where anybody warned him. Even if they did...what happened to freedom of speech? Kerry was going to answer his question!

I hope this kid sues, and wins bigtime. We don't need a communist gestapo police force in this country.

There were numerous guards around. The tasering was uncalled for, as he was already on the ground. While the kid shouldn't have been putting up a fight...he also had no business being arrested in an open discussion forum asking questions in the first place.

I think yer wrong on just about every count. He was warned, his mike was turned off, and he was told his time was up. Just because you don't see it. Witnesses attest to this. Fox news and MSNBC have had them on.

We cannot let people just decide it's their meeting. I have no sympathy for the guy. Then, instead of leaving, he decides to put several innocent people in harm's way.

This is what happens when little children don't hear the word "NO" enough when they're young.

He wasn't there to ask questions. He was there to make a statement.

I believe he got exactly what he deserved.

He was rude, obnoxious, belligerant, generally immature and he overstayed his welcome. Most of the audience cheered the police taking him away.

Yeah, this kid is a real menace to soceity, this is exactly why I think public whippings should be allowed as an example to others. We can't have people running around speaking their mind anyplace they choose especialy on a college campus. Not when there are plenty of free speech areas off campus.

Well, I gotta admit that I do get some kind of primal thrill out of hearing another human screaming in pain and begging for it to stop. Especialy when pinned to the floor by six or seven other people. :thumbs:

If they carry tasers to avoid injury while wrestling large college aged crazies then why do they use them on elementary students and feeble little old ladies? And why does it take six of them?

Meyer, a senior telecommunications major from the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Weston, has a Web site featuring several homemade videos. In one, he stands in a street with a sign that says "Harry Dies" after the latest Harry Potter book was released. In another, he acts like a drunk in a bar while trying to pick up a man dressed in drag.


The site also has what is called a "disorganized diatribe" attributed to Meyer that criticizes the Iraq war, the news media for not covering the conflict enough and the American public for paying too much attention to celebrity news.


Another site had pictures of Meyer licking a woman's face and making a suggestive pose as he stood beas up, police said. He had asked Kerry about impeaching President Bush, why he didn't challenge the 2004 election results and whether he and Bush were members of the secret society Skull and Bones at Yale University.

Methinks there is more to this young man and his "free speech" than meets the eye.

I would suggest electro shock therapy for anyone who fails to conform to our way of thinking. I never implied that I agreed with the treatment of this young man.....I just implied that he has a record of getting himself video-taped while in the midst of outlandish and controversial behavior.....and posting these videos for all the world to see.

Being stupid isn't a crime...well, then again maybe it is in the post 9/11 era. Being illegal isn't a crime so being stupid probably is. Okay yer right. :smilewinkgrin:

As for Kerry offering to answer the kids questions, what makes this kid's questions any more important than the kid who was next in line? What about the kid who was all the way at the end of the line who didn't get to ask her question because this young man decided he was entitled to ask and get answered whatever and however many questions he had?

What rant is that? From the clips I watched he no sooner than asked the questions than two cops started shoving him towards the door? The kid didn't even have time to rant. Is it standard poilce procedure to have six people hold a person down while they use electric shock om them? He was already subdued and unable to move, there was no need for using a taser at that point.

One thing you have to remember about the news media, is that they show bits and pieces meant to provoke interest and not always meant to provide the whole story. Sometimes there are limits on time that keep them from showing absolutely everything.

No I gotta work all day so I can keep sending payments to a communist country via Wal Mart and NAFTA, TV isn't something I do very often. One thing I know about the media. It''s controlled by a handful of people in a handful of corporations. What isn't mass advertising is mass conditioning.

This kid's crime was not showing his papers to the authorities. He get's tasered repeatedly. Carpro and Bro Curtis should get a thrill out of this one. Remember this well next time someone asks to see your biometric national ID fellers, there is no distinction between you and any other "civilians" in Big Brother's mind. This is what America is all about now.

People are often quick to judge the actions of the police, but if the kid had pulled a gun and shot a couple of people, then everybody would have been asking, why they didn't do anything to prevent it from happening. They expect law enforcement to be perfect. Sad.
