Liberal Hermeneutics

Eh my critics will always find a way to criticize me no matter what I say.
Exactly! This is what I mean. People do offer their best (even when they know only insults will be returned). Why? Because your pride cannot allow you to see anything but criticism. God commands us to humble ourselves and come to Him. When you become less prideful and more humble you would do well to look back at all those who gave you their best and seriously consider their words.

You people are strangers on a internet board. For all I know you could be faking it. Why would I trust you or anyone on this board? No real relationships come from real life encounters.

If that is true why are you always asking for advice and opinions on this message board?

BTW the same can be said for any author of books you read. They are strangers and have no knowledge of your life, to have any idea of what you need to hear. On the other hand you have been posting here for almost 7 years, giving people a long history to know you and to tell you what you NEED to hear. But it's clear you would rather find a book, written by someone that knows nothing about you, that tells you what you WANT to hear.

Faking it? We are not here to coddle you, give you a blankey and tuck you in bed. We are talking about doctrine and dialogue, not relationship.

What I am saying is that you respond in a very prideful manner. Maybe you are faking it and doing a study on how Christians respond online to a prideful, secular evangelist. We really don’t know, so we deal with what is posted.

And what is posted is here for all to read. I've learned from many people here (to name a very few: @JamesL helped me realize the impact of what we so often ignore in our traditions, @TCassidy walked me through a very important distinction that I was not being very clear on when discussing the Atonement, @Iconoclast provided me with some interesting sources regarding covenant theology....and there are so many more that have offered information through the years).

By all appearances, your pride has hindered your discipleship. Again, you are exhibiting what I believe to be the result of a couple of generations (mine included) that neglected biblical literacy in favor of evangelism. Your posts seem to reflect a deficit when it comes to Scripture and applying God's Word.

I hope that you will at least give "Grasping God's Word" a shot. I believe it will help you when you do humble yourself - and if you are a genuine believer, humility will come....one way or another. That's how you know you are His (God disciplines His true children).

That book is too expensive at $19.99. Got anything smaller?

I have and have read How to Read the Bible for all it's worth which is a book on hermeneutics.
The author is Pentecostal. :Biggrin

Just missing around....he is but I think that book would be good as well :Thumbsup . I enjoyed his (Gordon Fee) "New Testament Exegesis".

We disagree on women pastors and the sign gifts. But all in all it was a good read I remember. It's in my price range and reading level. Osborne's spiral is way too deep for the average reader.

Grasping God's Word was the textbook in one of my classes from Liberty U. It is a fantastic book. If you can't afford 20 bucks, then I'd have to say that maybe you need to quit buying tracts (which usually just add to the litter problem) and save up enough money to purchase the book and then take about 6 months to really go through that book. Have a soft, teachable spirit. Leave your own preconceived notions out of it. Leave what YOU want to do out of it. Go and humble yourself before the Lord FIRST and then He will lead you to where HE wants you to go.

I've read many of your threads and well...I find you do not have a soft and teachable spirit. You are letting your ego (self) get in the way of God working in your life. You need to back down, back off, gain some humility and then maybe you will be more successful.

But you can, as Tcassisdy asked in post# 2 "Please indicate a thread and post number when you have been accused of liberal exegesis."
He can't. In a PM he was complaining about his "critics" and I told him that he interprets the bible liberally based on his circumstances and desires and used liberal hermeneutics (not in terms of liberal Christianity or textual criticism but in terms of liberally interpreting Scripture based on his circumstances and desires.....he probably looked up "liberal exegesis" and went from there without understanding exactly what I was saying). He just picked up on "liberal" and took to the internet.

It was my fault also as I was not thinking "liberal hermeneutics" as a term (since we were not discussing that topic) but simply, a liberal way of interpreting and dealing with Scripture. I didn't count on wiki.:)

And don't forget the accompanying lectures: How to Read the Bible Like a Seminary Professor
Yes. Good series of lectures, but they are at a fairly low level. Good information for a new convert or a Christian who wants to get serious about his bible reading/study. :)

Dallas has a lot of stuff like this online, and free. And you even get a certificate when you complete a course.

No credit for it, of course, but still an excellent program.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I admit to a bias toward DTS.) :D

So does my Pastor, as he is a alumni of theirs!
