London Baptist Confession of 1689: Do you hold to it?

I tend to believe 'elect' applies only to certain individuals for the reasons I have already pointed out. Neither Paul, nor John called themselves elect, but they addressed others as elect.
You "tend to believe" a lot of things, doesn't mean they are in the Bible.

Oh, and Paul WAS one of the elect.

Scripture please?

You are kidding, right?

No, I was not kidding. Paul never claimed to be elect. John never claimed to be elect.

If you have Scripture that says Paul or John called themselves elect, produce it please.

Did you ever read Ephesians?

Ephesians

1 1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Have read it many times. Says nothing of elect there, now does it?

That word chosen in that verse does not mean 'elect'.

1) to pick out, choose, to pick or choose out for one's self 1a) choosing one out of many, i.e. Jesus choosing his disciples 1b) choosing one for an office 1c) of God choosing whom he judged fit to receive his favours and separated from the rest of mankind to be peculiarly his own and to be attended continually by his gracious oversight 1c1) i.e. the Israelites 1d) of God the Father choosing Christians, as those whom he set apart from the irreligious multitude as dear unto himself, and whom he has rendered, through faith in Christ, citizens in the Messianic kingdom: (James 2:5) so that the ground of the choice lies in Christ and his merits only
Origin: middle voice from 1537 and 3004 (in its primary sense); TDNT - 4:144,505; v
Usage: AV - choose 19, choose out 1, make choice 1; 21

5668 Tense - Aorist (See 5777) Voice - Middle (See 5785) Mood - Indicative (See 5791) Count - 88

Here we go again with the "elect after you believe" or "God predestined people to be elect based on His foreknowedge of who would believe."

Oy vey.

The LBC of 1689 has I believe the best statement on the Scriptures of any of the Baptist Confessional Statements.

I particularly like paragraphs 9 & 10

There are certain that are elect. John did not call himself elect, neither did Paul... but both are saved.

Saved does not necessarily mean elect, nor elect saved.
With nonesense like this....why bother?

Not for with him. It is an exercise in futility to discuss anything with Mr Holier than thou.

I am relatively new to the LBC actually. I haven't agrred with everything but I tend to rethink my positions if they are not in line with the LBC. Not that it is perfect but I figure the men who wrote it were much more studied that I am.

Rather than say 'What nonsense...', produce Scripture that emphatically shows every saved person is elect.

Seems like every time I show Scripture to substantiate my beleifs, many want to argue the stand but cannot produce anything to refute it.

If the Scripture is there it should not be a hard task.

His Blood Spoke My Name said:
Which further proves that elect does not mean saved.

Elect means chosen to be saved.
Elect means chosen for a purpose.
Scripture even references elect angels.

These groups do not necessarily overlap, especially the angels. But if you are saved, it is because you are elect to be saved.

Elect angels, yes. Angels cannot get saved. They are either already Angels of God, or Angels of the devil.

Contrary to many false religions, people do not become angels once they die.

So, that further proves elect does not mean saved. Elect is chosen, but not saved.

Npet said that elect means chosen to be saved . I agree .

The elect are indeed chosen . In their earthly lives they receive salvation -- God has ordained such . All the elect will be saved nary a one will fall through the cracks .

Yes there are elect angels . They have no need of salvation . The fallen angels ( demons ) can't be saved . It's a funny thing that synergists on the BB don't complain about the injustice of God in not granting salvation to the fallen angels . But O the hue and cry that ascends when the Lord's distinguishing grace is maintained by those who believe in particular redemption !

Do you really need to state the obvious -- that "people do not become angels when they die" ? I don't see any Mormon posters here -- so far . Even "Highway To Heaven" fans don't believe that stuff .

Of course you agree. You are of Calvinistic persuasion... as is npetreley.

Fortunately, the Bible says elect means differently that you are saying.

The hard task is not proving it from scripture, it is getting prideful "free willers" to admit to it.
Your problem is with your own heart. Not with what the Bible says.

If it is not hard to prove, Dale, prove it... instead of just saying it is not hard to prove.
It has been proven 1000 times on this forum but you will not listen.
You refuse to believe.
So unless you are honest and sincere and trying to learn I think I will "abstain" from wasting more time on your foolishness.
