Lukewarm

Id say it could mean that they were a church which had not "clothed" itself with the good works which ought to tell the world that they are following Christ.

The church as a whole very well could have been teaching the wrong things. They had become lacksadaisical, lazy, and uncaring. They no longer had a consistently good witness for Christ, and needed to come back to the realization of what Christ had done for them and what He had to offer them.

 

The "church" at Laodicea was teaching heretical gnosticism. This is far more than becoming lazy and uncaring...and definately were of no witness to Christ. They couldn't "come back to the realization of what Christ had done for them"...because at that point in time, they did not "buy" from Christ what they needed to overcome . I'm not real sure where you get the church had not been "clothed" with good works. It is evident they did not possess any works that would insinuate they were true believers. Remember, Christ said "...buy from me..." (since they did not OWN salvation) an offer to "overcome", to become believers, not "re-clothe yourselves" as they did not own it in the first place. 3:20 puts the nail in the coffin that Christ is on the outside of not only their church, but those who make up the "church".
