Make your own law

I'd like for you to make up a law. It has to be something that pertains to all humans. Do not base it on the bible and do not base it on morals. Explain how you came up with this law, the reason it is needed, and how you believe it will effect people for the better.

As a libertarian, I'm not much good at making new laws but there are a bunch I'd like to repeal.

No way would I attempt such under these parameters!
Should one (law) become reality under these conditions, it would probably "hurt" 100-1000 persons for every one it "helped"; IMHO!!

No employer can require someone to work such shifts so that they cannot get eight hours of sleep during a 24 hour period. Too many mistakes are made due to lack of sleep. You do not have to sleep for eight hours if you don't want to but it is your choice not your employers. If it takes you an hour to get ready and an hour to get to work, then an hour back home and an hour to wind down that's four hours plus your 8 to sleep is 12 hours, therefore, you can only work 12 hours at most in one day. Punishment is one day off with pay (that will stop it).

If it can have no Biblical or moral basis, then it will be a really monstrous law. Here's my law.

Amputation of the tongue is required for anyone suspected of using foul language. The benefit will be a drastic decrease in the use of foul language.

Roy, my mama washed my mouth out with soap - it wasn't so drastic & got the point across. ;)

Who gets to decide what's foul and what's fair?

You should be happy that your mama used Biblical and moral guidelines in administering punishment. Without it, she may have pushed a red hot iron through your tongue.

Without Biblical and moral guidelines, I guess we can use the "Gospel According to Roy".

Everyone must acknowledge that there is only one true, holy name, and vow subservience to the blessed name.

The name of Bob, of course.

Law 1 - You make a mess, you clean it up

Law 2 - Find a gate open? Leave it open. Find it shut? Leave it shut.

Law 3 - Don't squat with your spurs on.

All hail the Mighty Dr. Bob :D :D :D (just kidding)

Laws? Hmmmmm. I know my wife would love to have a law passed that states that men MUST put the toilet {seat}down after use hehehe. (of course, I'm of the opinion that if your arm ain't broke, then you can put it down yourself) ((gee, do you think this one should be in the humor forum?? :D :D ))

God Bless!!!

Mike, this was my first thought exactly!

So, you don't think giving a small fish a lighter sentence to get him/her to help convict the big ones is a good thing?

I usually don't pick up the toilet. Those things are kinda heavy, you know.

Look at Sammy Gravanno. They gave him a lighter sentence to go after Gotti. After Gravanno got out, he opted out of the witness protection program, then moved to Arizona where he started a drug ring. He's only guilty of 19 murders. He even wrote his own book about life in the Cosa Nostra. He got a slap on the wrist for 19 murders, a million dollar book deal, and resumed his life of crime. Looks like the government got the short end on this one.

I think only one post so far has really answered the question put forth-- the one about being limiting required working hours in a day, because "too many mistakes are made due to lack of sleep."

It appears that the purpose of this thread is to show that all laws eventually come down to morals; therefore to say "We can't legislate morality" is some kind of copout. Correct?

Alcott, that was SORTA the point, yes, but I really did expect to be shown wrong to a measurable degree, so that in the end I would say "ok, it's possible but only in a small percent of the total of laws".

You can't legislatively make people moral but the only thing you can legislate IS morality (defining right and wrong). You are wrong if you do this or that, or you are only right if you do this or that. As to whether it is the purpose of this thread or not I have no idea.

I took a stab at this problem, but given the rules
(Do not base it on the bible and do not base it on morals. Explain how you came up with this law, the reason it is needed, and how you believe it will effect people for the better), it looks like an impossible task. To have a law that is unbiblical and immoral, which has a distinct need, with resulting good is just hard to imagine.

Let me try again. Here goes:

1. The Law: Pay 70% of all of your income in
federal taxes.

2. Explanation: Hegelian logic - people exist for the good of the state.

3. Reason for the need: national health care.

4. How it will effect people for the better: People will have to learn to get by on less if they expect to live. It could spark more concern for neighbors and sharing within communities, with everyone living on edge. And if you get sick, a hospital stay will be relatively cheap, if they can find bed space for you.
