Men whom call themselves "Reverend"

As a Primitive Baptist we shun the thought of a man wearing such a title. Knowing the bible:
never refers to any of the Apostles or such as "Reverend"
“Psalm 111:9 says, ‘Holy and reverend is his [God’s] name.’ It is therefore wrong to apply to man that which belongs exclusively to the Lord.”

If you mean "reverend" verbum then you are right. If you read Acts 5 however, you will see the term in principle. The term "reverend," in my experience, has been used to express respect for a position (and this is what I mean by the reference to Luke's account regarding the attitude towards the apostles).

Anyway, I've never been in a church that used that term. I see it on signs every now and then. I always figured it took the place of "Dr." for less educated pastors (the pastor didn't have a title so they settled on "Rev.").

Gods name is Yahweh (yä`wĕ), modern reconstruction of YHWH, the ancient Hebrew ineffable name for God God, divinity of the three great monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as many other world religions. See also religion and articles on individual religions.
..... Click the link for more information. . Other forms are Jah, Jahve, Jahveh, Jahweh, Jehovah, Yahve, Yahveh, and Yahwe.
Therefore,Yahweh is holy - which is why many will not even use the vowels to spell His name.

Reverend is simply a title for man, and does not refer to God the Father.

That is an honorable opinion .... but it would be wrong to ramrod it down the throats of those who do not see it as you do!

So glad you have joined us here on the board, but I continue to see you looking to shove your beliefs on the rest of us. It might be more Christ-like not to expect others to believe as you do since the PBC does not have a direct word straight from God regarding some of the many issues you don't seem to believe in!

I use the "Pastor" before my name, but many folks like to introduce me as Reverend, and I am sure not going to pop their balloon.

Try to have a good day, and remember, the office of Pharisee and Sadducee's ended two-thousand years ago!

There are several sermons on: "respect of persons and vainglory".

We seem to have watered down the teaching of: who gets the glory?

To revere means to stand in awe. Now what?

Another sermon: "Clerics and hirelings in the Church".

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

But what about those of us who don't normally use the KJV. I did a quick check of the NASB, the ESV, the NIV and the NKJV and they all use the term "awesome" rather than reverend. The HCSB uses "awe-inspiring." This is a title not often used among Baptists but used rather perfunctorily among mainline Protestants. It is not an effort to give honor to themselves, and if it were I would oppose it. But it is rather just a title used to identify them as clergy.

True, it is used a a title. But also an accepted english meaning is "Worthy of reverence". I am just not at ease with the term. If it causes stumbling..., Similar to swear words, better words/terms are available that are accepted without offense why not use them.:saint:

Not impressed with referring to someone as Reverend, myself. I have no problem with Pastor or Preacher but Reverend?

Years ago I e-mailed the Editor of Sword of the Lord asking if any of their printed sermons were from plain ole' Pastors. The author of every printed sermon came with..., Dr., behind their name with some trailing with an assortment of the alphabet.

His response? He didn't see anything wrong with someone reflecting their accomplishments in life so otherwise, just go away. Well, in reality there's nothing wrong with being recognized for ones accomplishments but if it is for the purpose of..., "Hey, look at me..." then a problem might exist.

I've been listed as "Rev." in obituaries and Clergy Records, but I've never called myself that. It's one of those issues where, if someone calls me that, I'm not going to call them down in front of other people. I don't refer to myself that way, but I cannot use the title "Pastor," as I've never been a pastor nor do I fit the qualifications listed to be a pastor, but that's another thread...

Reverend: being worthy of being revered.

Revere: to regard with respect.

I understand who so many IFBs don't want the word used in reference to them.

They are not, and know they are not, worthy of respect!

So if you have an injury that needs a major operation - would you insist on a person who calls himself a (medical) doctor - or would just anyone do?

Do you really think that as many people would pay attention to his words and respect the research the author has done if he just signed it as a regular Joe Blow? It would be no different than a forum post, most of which isn't exactly taken very seriously.

Personally I am of the opinion that the highest form of address in Christianity is "Pastor." All the rest, "Reverend," "Doctor," "Preacher," "Brother," are inferior to the greatest honor God bestows on any man, the call to pastor. For God to place His children into the pastoral watch-care of a mere man is the ultimate calling of a Christian. :)
