Miss Manners

I never heard of the Miss Manners column. I remember back in the day the advice columns of Ann Landers and Dear Abby (they were twin sisters).

I clicked the link and read the replies to the two letters. The first about the Vietnamese manicurists reminded me of an incident. While in the Army, I had a friend who was a signal intelligence analysts. He learned two different languages at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. The first was Spanish and the other Mandarin.

One day went off post for lunch. We were in uniform when we went to a restaurant. It wasn't long before two Hispanics were speaking to each other loud enough for us to hear. After a bit, my friend began to look angry. He went to the table where the two Hispanics were seated and began speaking to them in Spanish. Those two guys looked shocked. My friend returned to the table and told me those guys were making fun of us because of our uniforms. He told me the two Hispanics were surprised and began apologizing.

Yet, in Germany - I walked back into my office just before lunch ended. My secretary was talking to her friend in German. As I walked in they started talking in English. AFter her friend left, I I asked Mrs Muller, why they started to converse in English. Mrs. Muller, stated - we did not want you to think we were talking about you! She was such a wonderful lady!

Anyways, Miss Manners answers questions on manners and proper etiquettes.

That was the proper and kind thing for them to do.

Each time a new infantry division was getting ready to deploy deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan, their DCG was accompanied by the CSM and G-2. I had a section I had to brief them. I didn't use acronyms because it would be like using a foreign language the DCG and CSM wouldn't understand. The last thing you want is to make them confused where they had to ask questions asking for further explanations. For instance instead of saying CM&IR, I'd say collection management and information requirements. Besides, it made my briefs go smoother and faster. We would always attach to them some of our analysts to deploy with them. This provided improved connectivity between the infantry division and us.

I'm sure you're aware of what I'm talking about. This is also a mistake that happens when a soldier transitions from military service to the private sector. They use all the military acronyms and jargon on their resume causing the HR personnel to place it in file 13 because they didn't understand it.
