Miss Manners

I never heard of the Miss Manners column. I remember back in the day the advice columns of Ann Landers and Dear Abby (they were twin sisters).

I clicked the link and read the replies to the two letters. The first about the Vietnamese manicurists reminded me of an incident. While in the Army, I had a friend who was a signal intelligence analysts. He learned two different languages at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. The first was Spanish and the other Mandarin.

One day went off post for lunch. We were in uniform when we went to a restaurant. It wasn't long before two Hispanics were speaking to each other loud enough for us to hear. After a bit, my friend began to look angry. He went to the table where the two Hispanics were seated and began speaking to them in Spanish. Those two guys looked shocked. My friend returned to the table and told me those guys were making fun of us because of our uniforms. He told me the two Hispanics were surprised and began apologizing.

Yet, in Germany - I walked back into my office just before lunch ended. My secretary was talking to her friend in German. As I walked in they started talking in English. AFter her friend left, I I asked Mrs Muller, why they started to converse in English. Mrs. Muller, stated - we did not want you to think we were talking about you! She was such a wonderful lady!

Anyways, Miss Manners answers questions on manners and proper etiquettes.

That was the proper and kind thing for them to do.

Each time a new infantry division was getting ready to deploy deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan, their DCG was accompanied by the CSM and G-2. I had a section I had to brief them. I didn't use acronyms because it would be like using a foreign language the DCG and CSM wouldn't understand. The last thing you want is to make them confused where they had to ask questions asking for further explanations. For instance instead of saying CM&IR, I'd say collection management and information requirements. Besides, it made my briefs go smoother and faster. We would always attach to them some of our analysts to deploy with them. This provided improved connectivity between the infantry division and us.

I'm sure you're aware of what I'm talking about. This is also a mistake that happens when a soldier transitions from military service to the private sector. They use all the military acronyms and jargon on their resume causing the HR personnel to place it in file 13 because they didn't understand it.

I have read some of Judith Martin's (Ms Manners) material and have noted some of the material...

*Miss Manners idea of democracy is a society in which the lower classes practice the kind of graciousness that will fit them perfectly for upper class positions.
*There are people who overcome adversity with courage, bravery, and determination, who turn their attention resolutely away from their own dis-satisfactions and toward bettering the lot of others. It is also true that the semblance of happiness eventually, by some alchemy of the spirit, turns genuine. But even the crudest effort is better than tossing ones problems unexpectedly.
*Judging from the lovelorn section of Miss Manners mail, available people aren't having fun at all. They're all full of anxieties about where their next liaisons are coming from, unable to connect their difficulties with their habit of dumping all their psychological problems. Flirts are happy people who are simply susceptible to additional delights.
*Miss Manners believes that if one does the right thing, one does not have to read nasty little books about how to deal with guilt. One never has any.
*If rudeness begets rudeness, which begets more rudeness, where will it all end? Miss Manners often receives letters from people who assume that she is a believer and can supply a method to 'putt down' this person or that. Miss Manners will not subscribe to such behavior. She does not allow rude people to spoil her life, but she does not seek satisfaction in spoiling theirs.
*Miss Manners meager arsenal consists only of the wither look, the insistent and repeated request, the cold voice, the report up the chain of command, and the tilted nose. Also the ability to dismiss inferior behavior from her mind as coming from inferior people. -Judith Martin
