I will vote for Mark Wicks and hope for votes to get siphoned off. But I will tell you in all honesty it is extremely difficult for me to muster any sympathy for that reporter in the first place. It looks to me like he may have been trespassing, was definitely trying to disrupt an event, may have got physical and may have started something he couldn't finish.

I really did screw up my sleep schedule tonight with this thread and this story but this is some history that we can all learn from. I do want to show a lot of respect to this article written by the Billings Gazette and I hope that the advice is taken: Gazette opinion: We're pulling our endorsement of Greg Gianforte

We also hope that other longer-term lessons can be realized from this bizarre, deplorable scuffle.

First, we hope that Republican party members and leaders call this for what it appears to be, an inexcusable act. We hope that partisan politics has not eroded our decency to the point where leaders and supporters feel the need to defend the indefensible.

Speaking of which, the Gianforte campaign should be appalled by its statement that would seem to justify the fight when it said the Bozeman Republican had tussled with a "liberal journalist." How would the campaign have known the reporter's political beliefs? And, is it suggesting that it's acceptable to put your hands on a reporter if you believe their political views are different from yours?

We also hope that this incident will cause us to take a long look in the mirror and a few deep breaths. This incident is not Montana. It's not America. It's not who we are, and attacking — literally — those with whom we disagree cannot be justified, tolerated or explained away. We must adopt zero tolerance for such behavior if freedom of expression means anything.

After voting, we'd suggest that residents in and around Billings attend the gathering at the Billings Public Library, "Civility in America" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. It appears that we all need a refresher course on it.

We believe that you cannot love America, love the Constitution, talk about the importance of a free press and then pummel a reporter.

Beyond that, if Gianforte didn't have the good and common sense to simply walk away from questions he didn't like, we cannot believe he's going to be able to make much more difficult, complex decisions when he's in Congress.

In no way would we want our readers or our community to believe we stood behind what appears to be an assault or an attack.

Fox news testimony:

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the man, as he moved on top the reporter and began yelling something to the effect of "I'm sick and tired of this!"

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. He then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.

To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte, who left the area after giving statements to local sheriff's deputies.

In this jurisdiction, the fines are about the same. In Ga. there is an affirmative defense to battery known as the "fighting words" doctrine. Pretty much, in this jurisdiction anyway, If You are asking for it and get your clock cleaned, oh well.
In my years as a police officer, I went to hundreds of fights where I made no arrest. I am a "red savage" so don't expect me to conform to white mans way if thinking. I am a poor old oppressed minority and I think like I think because people I never knew got herded onto reservations. Even though my family has been off the reservation 70 years, according to liberals, I am still supposed to blame everything on white men mistreating my ancestors. So, to use liberal logic, its your fault I think like I do. Hey, it works for the black man, so be consistent and apply it to the red man. Just to be clear, all my problems are your fault.

Seriously anytime I have to fill out a application for whatever, I'm asked for my Race, gender, military service record etc. You must get that also.....so how do you feel when you can check off Native American? Wouldn't it speak better of any politician if they had self control and if assaulted to keep their cool and charge the person who assaulted them.

Of course, from what Fox News says the reporter did not assault this fellow who has dodged questions about Trump care.

Firefighter academy is when thus first became a reality to me. I did not want to go, did not give a flip about being there, and put in no effort. The chief Dr used he wanted the SWAT team to be certified firefighters, so there I was. I never studied, never put any effort in practical exercises, slept through half the class, etc. Etc. There was a white man in the class who ate, drank. Slept, and breathed being a firefighter. He worked his tail off. I know that my test and practical composite was 94%. His was 98%. Who do you think walked out of graduation with valedictorian? Me. It made me mad and then it made me real sad for him. He got screwed.

Maybe they need an additional box. Some of us Americans have ancestors going back to the 1600's and only the Good Lord knows all ethnic bloodlines that flow through our bodies. I know of Welsh, English, Scottish, German, Austrian, Native American, Czech and French. But I am sure there are groups I am unaware of. I have ancestors on both sides that date back to the early 1600's. Maybe we need a box for American Mongrel. Guess that might open up a whole new box of worms.

My Dad worked as a soil conservationist for the USDA. You can still see the contours he laid out as far back as the 1930's. He said there was a time where you had to check what race you were. Then there was a period of time when that was declared illegal. Then it was instituted again. I am not sure of the dates of these changes.

Best of all there should be no racial boxes to check. Take people as people and hire by ability.

From what I've heard incident took place in a small office room where Fox reporters were setting up to do an interview, off of the main meeting room. This did not take place in the main meeting room. There is no video.

Apparently Gianforte has been hounded on whether or not he would support TrumpCare and he's waffled by saying he will answer that question only after the CBO cost estimates were released. Well, that CBO report came out yesterday. So here comes reporter Ben Jacobs barging into this office room where the Fox news people and Gianforte are setting up for an interview and he demands to know his stand on TrumpCare. I can understand why Gianforte is angry and told him to leave but physically attacking the reporter was uncalled for.
