Saddened as this reflects poorly on Jesus, fellow Christians and the pastoral ranks. But I can't say I'm surprised.

Jack Shaap Fired; Allegations of Adultery

July 31, 2012 (HAMMOND, Ind.) -- A Hammond megachurch has fired its pastor amid a criminal investigation involving the church and its college.

The First Baptist Church of Hammond said Tuesday that pastor Jack Schaap committed "a sin that has caused him to forfeit his right to be our pastor." It says church representatives are cooperating with police.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich tells The Times of Munster his department began a criminal investigation Tuesday after talking with senior church representatives. He says the investigation involves the church and its Hyles Anderson College.

The church elected the 54-year-old Schaap pastor in February 2001 after the late Rev. Jack Hyles died of a heart attack. Hyles' daughter married Schaap.

The church says it moved into a new 7,500-seat auditorium under Schaap, a native of Holland, Mich

Chicago News report:

Wilson says Schaap is under scrutiny for an inappropriate relationship with a young woman. Schaap is married.

"He was very open and very ashamed and very, very sad by his actions," Wilson said.

FOX Chicago News learned information about the affair was sent to the Lake County Sheriff's department to determine if the girl was 18 at the time of the relationship.

Wilson said Schaap was in seclusion with his wife, Cindy, daughter of Jack Hyles, the pastor who built the First Baptist Church and co-founded Hyles-Anderson College in Schererville.

Just plain sad. We ought to remember Galatians 6:1 before we start hitting the self-righteous button or the inevitable comparisons between his father in law and him.

"Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted."

Sad story. However how many men as well as men in the ministry over the years have we seen do the same with women, and teens. So this isn't something new, however it is becoming to common.
It gives the world more bullets to come after we Christians with.

Wow, what a shocker, if you're shocked by water being wet.

THE GOOD NEWS: It was reported to authorities AND admitted. Not so surprised that admitted, may have been admitted first to the guys with the idea of "I'll be forgiven, we'll move on" but whatever the case, for FBCH, this is PROGRESS. A step in the right direction after so many wrong ones.

Maybe the place CAN turn around and stop churning out idiocy at lightning fast pace.

Maybe.

I agree with Gina. It sounds like it was found out by the leadership at the church and reported to the proper authorities and that is a very good thing.

I dont understand these comments. Is he a "word of faither", or maybe an extreme "fundy" legalist?

First of all, let me say how bad I feel for all of those people at FBC Hammond. I can only imagine what they're going through.

But this.....:

Wilson says Schaap is under scrutiny for an inappropriate relationship with a young woman. Schaap is married.

"He was very open and very ashamed and very, very sad by his actions," Wilson said.
.

But of course, he got caught! I bet he wasn't feeling that bad, when he was in that motel room porkin' that young lady! :BangHead::mad:

Anyhow, just my feelings. This is what happens, when a Ministry becomes "man-centered" as opposed to "God-Centered."

Yup. Never rejoice when this happens to anyone whether they be in "my" camp or not. I always take it as a warning from my Lord. Not one of us is incapable of doing the same- or worse.

As to Why the FBI is invovled

  • The federal age of consent is 18 years old
  • Indiana law sets the age of consent at 16
  • Illinois age of consent is 17
  • First Baptist Church: the girl involved is 17 years old
And there is the question of if State lines were crossed.

There are also different standards for a person in a position of trust or authority.
